HELP! Upgrading OS X for FCP HC

I am attempting to upgrade from FCP 4.1 to HD. I downloaded the file and come to find out that I have OS X v. 10.2.8 on my G5 I purchased last October or so. I cannot upgrade because it says I need 10.3 or higher.

Now please tell me I don't have to go out and buy a new OS for a computer I just purchased 8 months ago! Is there any free upgrade for this? Thanks.

Only if you want to upgrade to FCP HD. 8 months is a long time with regards to computer and OS development. How long did you expect to use your computer before there'd be a newer OS or faster chip? There's always going to be something newer and better (like the DVX-100A, released just a year after the original DVX-100).:)

Besides, Apple usually offers deals on OS software if you bought your computer within a month of so of a new OS release. If you purchased around the time Panther was released, you probably could have gotten a discount.

I do agree 8 months is a long time in computer land, but give me a moment to vent here. I am new Mac convert and have a PC and Mac next to each other. Having had PCs for years and years now, I can't ever recall a time (except for maybe the major upgrade from 3.1 to 95 I think) when a new PC OS came out and made their programs unusable. This is going to leave a little sour taste in my mouth about Macs. But you can't go wrong with FCP!

Well, I think you've got this backwards. Your OS is not making your software unusable; instead, there's new software that requires a new OS. This is very common in both Mac and PC worlds. FCP 4.1 will work fine in 10.3.

what is the procedure for upgrading to a newer OS? I too am still using 10.2.8. I am glad I read theses posts before attempting to download the FCP HD.

I must say that having a hobby in videography is not cheap! I might save some money if I start collecting antique cars instead!
