Help! Transitions not visible in Premiere CS5

I'm working in CS5 for the first time (I'm a CS3 guy) and have had a weird thing happen.

My transitions (namely cross dissolve) between clips are no longer visible.

You can see the transition in the timeline, but when you play it goes black for the length of the transition and then returns to the video.

I'm guessing there's some button for toggling effects on/off but for the life of me I can find it. If anybody can suggest anything I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

I'm starting to worry that it's a problem with CS5 itself.

Cross dissolves are visible with some cuts, not others. It seems completely random.

Any thoughts? Anything at all?

are you using an nvidiia card with the hardware accelleration turned on in Premiere? is it AVCHD footage? I think premiere has problems dissoving between two pieces of video from the same clip, which might be why it seems random. i've had problems with bery stuttery dissolves, but not just BLACK instead. do the transitions render ok when you export, even though you can't preview them?

Hi Zaarac.

Yes. I have an nvidia card with hardware acceleration (mercury engine) on. It's not ACHDV footage - just standard .mov files captured from a DV deck.

I think you're right about dissolving between two pieces of the same video. No problem it seems with two different video sources.

I haven't tried exporting yet. I'll try today and let you know.

Thanks.

I have a related problem. When I export to H264 all my cross dissolves render appear correctly. When I export to an uncompressed AVI (no codec) some cross dissolves do not render and instead it renders the underlying video. When I use the new Debugmode Frameserver 2.10 for Premiere CS5 the same things happens as in the uncompressed AVI case. Am I doing something wrong?

I've tried hardware MPE and software MPE. I've enabled and disabled Max Render Quality none of these appear to work.
