I've got the fotasy follow focus and I stuck a arri style focus whip and i can't get it off!

Any advice on how to get it unstuck?

Are both parts aluminum? If so, you may have a case of galling. If so, then all you can do is pull hard. There is nothing else to be done. I can't imaging that galling would happen in this case, but I also don't understand how you can get a whip stuck in a handle.

If pulling hard will wreck the focus puller, then the next best thing to do is cut off the whip and drill it out and try to save the puller.

Hi Paul,

Yes, both parts are aluminum. The tip that attaches to the follow focus has that small ball bearing that supposedly locks it in place and lock it does.

Here's the part in question

The whip broke off when we were pulling on it. I can push on it but I can't pull it out of the socket.

It would be very difficult for the ball to lock in place unless there was some manufacturing defect. Is this the first time you put this whip in this FF?

3 options in the order I would try. All three will likely wreck what's left of the whip, but the FF will be ok:

- Get some locking pliers and pull hard
- take it to a body shop and have them use a sliding hammer to yank it out.
- drill it out

FINALLY!

Got the damn thing unstuck with a few cosmetic damages on the follow focus and minus whip, though i'm pretty sure I can attach the whip shaft back to the thingie... Whether I'm still willing to use it is still unsure. This pretty much explains why some equipment are more expensive than others and why it's worth to buy those said equipments.

I added a few drops of all purpose oil, wiggled it a few times to make sure everything was properly lubricated and just yanked it out like a sore tooth.

I suspect the metal ball bearing was the culprit as it left scratches on the thing.

That's the thing, it's not the first time I've used it and I never had a problem with it until this particular time. I guess it was just my luck...

That ball is sticking up very high and doesn't look like it is properly crimped in place. Does it depress into the hole or is it just solid? If it's solid, that is your problem.

Your suspicions were right - the ball bearing doesn't depress at all. Whether they made it that way or not, I'm not sure.

I have the EZFoto 15" Arri-style follow focus whip.

I guess I can sand the ball down a little to make sure that it doesn't stick up as high.

You can do that, but it will never work as intended and you will damage your FF handle further. It will either keep sticking, or it will want to fall out. Without the ball being under spring pressure, your going to ruin the FF socket and when you decide to get a whip that is made right, it will no longer work because you will wear the detent in the FF handle and the whip won't stay in.

You already damaged the socket and detent in the FF. Don't make it worse.
