Hey guys need a bit of help... I edit straight on the timeline or transcode if i'm doing heavy grading...my system can handle it...however a friend of mine is editing a project which i shot with my 7d for her, but she doesn't have a system that can handle it ( older macbook with 4g ram). How can she proxy edit with premiere cs4? I believe she also has mpeg streamclip. I get that you have to transcode all the footage to a lower res( in this case SD) format and keep the same file names. However after your edit how do you switch out all the files for the higher res original files?

thanks in advance

Switching the footage is done by making the low resolution footage Off LIne and making it On Line by selecting the high resolution footage.

i'm not sure i understand. offline editing is the same as proxy editing no? I'd like to know how to actually replace the low res proxy files with the high res originals. How is that done in premiere? I know there's an option to right click on a clip and replace the clip with another. However doing that to each clip is time consuming and annoying. there must be an easy way to replace all the clips at once. that is what i'd like to know how to do within premiere.

1) Encode all of your 7D material into a lower resolution Quicktime format that you can edit in real time. I like Sorenson 3 640x360 at 2048kbps. Keep the audio uncompressed
2) Put those file into a folder called "OFFLINE"
3) Leave your originals into a folder called "ONLINE"
4) Make your edits with the files in the OFFLINE folde.
5) When you think you're ready to finish your project with final tracking, graphics, and color, you're going to do whats called an Edit Lock.

Doing a new online can be done by 2 ways

1) Do it in the Editor by using offline, media, and then selecting new media
2) Just replace the clips in the folder.

When you open up premiere with your new files, you'll need to make a new timeline with the higher resolution settings. Probably 1920x1080.

It's not an easy straight through workflow, which is why so many people updated to CS5 since they don't have to deal with online/offline.

If you keep all of your proxy footage in a folder (with same file names of course), you can select the entire folder and make it offline, then relink media for the entire folder and link it to the high rez set of clips and it should pull all of them in at once...

try to PM the dvx member, thats shooting the feature" leap" he's doing the same thing( I don't know his name), I remember reading something in his blog about doing this very thing.
