Help solve a puzzle

I've been running 3d studio max r3 forever but now it has issues. If I create a file and save it to the desktop then close max I get a windows explorer error and this error will loop until I delete the max file from the desktop. I formatted the whole c drive yesterday thinking some bug was in the system but I'm having the exact same issue. The max file also can't be read by the max program. Any files I created months ago in max will live on the desktop with no problem and once max has opened an old file, the problem seems to go away. Nothing has changed on my system software wise and the mem test I'm doing has shown no bad simms. Could something in the master boot be bad? What do you guys make of this?

PS...Max has run for years on my system with no problems

Good question....I don't know. I thought of that myself but never got around to testing it. If I save to some otherplace and it works, that will just add a new piece to the puzzle though as I can't accept a workaround knowing there's a demon in the chips! :Drogar-Thinking(DBG

Well, the desktop isn't a "real" folder*, so it behaves differently sometimes.

Sometimes badly.

I'd avoid it for anything but shortcuts.

*Well, yes it is...but it isn't, too.

Well, wherever I save a max file to has the same problem. As soon as I open the file folder where the max ffile lives, windows explorer generates an error and closes the folder.
I moved the file over the network to another machine and the file lives happilly on that desktop and opens with no problems. When I go to pull it back to this machine....Windows explorer has generated errors...WTF!

OK.

Try this:

Start | Run

Then type in the full path to the file (like D:\MyDir\coolfile.abc or whatever it is) and press OK.

I will try that as soon as the system is back up. I decided to run a clean install with all drives formated and the mbr replaced. Next I'm going to rebuild the system systematcally with Max being the first software loaded after system files and drivers. This process could take a few hours but I'm hardcore on finding and getting rid of glitches. Whatever is bugging Max could cause any number of problems elsewhere...Or not. Like I said, this program has run for years living on the same drive with the same software neighbors for years with no issues with the only changes being Firefox and thunderbird daily updates.....Well not daily but it seems Mozilla has had a few too many updates of late:) Thanks so much for your suggestions.

PS....Is there a way to stop Firefox and Thunderbird from auto updating? My philosophy is the old "If it aint broke don't fix it"

Name me one thing outside of a non stop flight to China that takes as long as a hardrive format???:(

Well on a brand new install with only the graphics drivers loaded that max file on my other system generates errors in windows explorer. I can only assume max is outputting corrupt files?

And the winner is.....Windows service pack 4. Max is rock steady till that beeaatch goes in. Go figure....Thanks uncle BILL!

rollback to no servicepack world didn't work...I mean, why would it? So it's back to format world. At least I now know what not to install:thumbup:

For both Firefox and Thunderbird:

1. Go to Tools > Options
2. Click on the Advanced category
3. Click on the Update tab

EDIT: I replied to your post, not realizing there was a second page to this thread...
