Help - Screen Flicker During Playback

Hey guys,

Very new editor (Still using the trial version of premier pro)

I'm shooting normal with the anamorphic adapter at 24pa - I interpret the footage in premiere for widescreen but when I export, it flickers like it's going back and forth between 4:3 and 16:9... Haven't a clue as to what to do. Can you help?

Hi Trey,
What format are you exporting to?
Does everything "flicker" or just some frames, e.g., transitions.

I export using the presets - on the video tab it say 1.2 pixels and it's Microsoft dv avi - when it completes the process it ends up as a microsoft media file. I don't know if that helps

Since you describe it as a flicker I would guess it's pretty rapid. Can you look at your exported Avi frame-by-frame and see if there's a regular pattern? How many frames of 16:9 and how many of 4:3?

sorry 'bout that. it is constant. like it's alternating between 4:3 and 16:9 through the whole clip, not just during transitions.

And did you look at it frame-by-frame and can you tell me if it's a regular pattern, and if so, how many frames 4:3 and how many frames 16:9?

I'm gonna have to stop helping you if you don't read my replies and answer all questions!  ;) This is the second time you've given only part of the info I asked for.

I have seen it also. it is not during transitions. It looks fine till exported. I had shot in 16.9 squeeze mode. When exported it plays wide screen, 4x3 alternatly. I exported in every mode I could find. I did get it to look correctly in real player but windows media 9/10 did not play correctly.

I had simlar problems mentioned above. I sloved it by reinstalling premiere and it worked fine. Maybe I just got lucky. Re-check your setting agian. I don't really know what else to tell you.

Kevy baby, my humble apologies once again. in priemiere everything looks totally fine. I can go frame by frame during playback - a.o.kay. When I export. It flickers evenly between 4:3 and 16:9. I don't know how to go frame by frame once it's exported I just play it. looks like one second widescreen one second normal (so every 24 frames it switches I guess). If this newbies explaination doesn't make any sense then I really don't know what to tell you... Thanks anyway bro.

You could re-import the exported AVI back into Premiere and look at it frame by frame.
The reason why I'm so interested in finding this out is that I'd like to know if it's liked to some of the other problems with PPro's pulldown removal. A rhythm of 1 frame bad followed by 3 good might indicate this.

I've tried to reproduce this myself with both 24p normal and 24p advanced widescreen footage but so far, no luck. But obviously, others have seen it.

is the file a 24p file .. if so ..i beleive its just a problem with WM player not handeling 24p .AVI right. it should work fine in any NLE or program that works right.

Hey Kevin, I imported the flickering file back into priemiere and it plays perfectly fine widescreen. checked it frame by frame - no problem. exported it back out and it flickers. Neil- it's a 24pa file.

Well, maybe as Neil says it's just Windows Media player being clueless about the pixel aspect ratio.

It might not be an issue at all, depending on what you are trying to do with this avi. Assuming you are just backing up the completed project, or exporting it to another program, everything will probably be OK>

Hey Trey,
I am not the xpert on this but I thimk I have seen this before.
Since this is 24pa file make sure when you export to avi check the compression for DV (NTSC) not 24P Advanced.

Hey tolakvoa... Just wanted to say thanks for your post... I haven't checked this thread in a while so I just kind of gave up on it... I did what you posted and that fixed the problem I initially wrote about. Thanks much.

I've had this problem too. I made a DVD in Adobe Encore, and the damn DVD also flickers in the same spots that the AVI. file did when played in a late-model DVD player on a TV. The file plays fine within Adobe Premiere. Never figured out what the problem was. You'll see it in two shots early in my zombie short, "Infection" on the DVD.
