Help Rig Set Up

Hi,
Here's my plan: HVX, Letus EX, Cinevate Rail System, RedRock FF (or maybe RR gears and IndiFocus Pro FF). No MatteBox. I have two questions:
1. If I don't want a Mattebox, would this set-up work with 12" rods or do I need 18" for some reason?
2. What would be a smart/cheap way to do shoulder mounted hand-held with this? What could I add to the Cinevate Rail system for a shoulder mount? How would this affect the length rails that I'll use? If this won't work with the Cinevate rails is there better route?
Thanks!!!

I would NOT recommend the spider brace for such a heavy rig.
From what I've seen the cavision grips look good. A comfortable shoulderpad is harder to find.

Thanks. Redrock has a picture with a shoulder mount on their main page http://www.redrockmicro.com/ but I don't see them selling anything like that.
Any word if the 12" rails would be long enough for all this? (meaning hvx, letus ex, lens, and shoulder mount stuff)
thanks

I went with the 60cm (also from cinevate), just to be on the safe side. Better to have too much then not enough, since you can always cut the excess. I'm also planning on doing a shoulder rig with my HVX/L-Ex combo, and so far, cinevate seems to be the way to go. Here's my inspiration for what I'm trying to achieve : http://cinevate.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=1193 Something like this, but with a L-Ex... 12" ain't gonna cut it.

Now, if only Dennis could send me my missing thumb screw for my rails system...

I think you'll need longer rails to accommodate the follow focus, and you might decide to add a Matte box in the future and you would already be set.

Hey there SNS,

1.In my humble experience, if you ever want to plug in your 35mm adapter some of those nifty big telephoto zoom lens, you should get the 18" rods. Even without a matte box, I don't think a 12" rod could ever be long enough to support big telephoto lenses (I'm thinking about my 7"-long Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8, which barely leaves 5" for the camera lens & the adapter). Plus, with 18" rods, there's always the possibility to further upgrade your rig with a matte box (even though you said you don't want one, but who knows what you'll want in a year or two?)

2.About a cheap handhled shoulder mount, I don't really know what you could get, but I sure know that for smart handheld, DvTec (www.dvtec.tv) got their really nice-looking and sturdy Dvrigpro (or DVrigpro HD for bigger and heavier setups) for around 550$ or 600$ plus shipping. DVXUser once did a review of the older version of the DVrigpro (http://www.dvxuser.com/articles/dvrig/). I think this product looks fantastic!

Damn, I sure wish I had the DVrigproHD for my rig, but alas, I need more dollaridoos! :Drogar-Shock(DBG):

Cheers,

Gabe

I guess 18" rails it is, then. Its funny that many companies are (or were?) only offering 12" (like RR and Cavision).
That DVRig Pro looks amazing! I'd love to have that pole that sits on the belt for stability. But don't think I'll be able to afford that for a while with all this other stuff I'm buying. Doesn't one of these cheaper companies make some handles and a shoulder pad that attaches right to the rails. I wouldn't think it would be hard to make at all. I'd think the IndiRails guy would make em for like $90.
thanks all,
ns
