Help please. Source is 16:9 and I can't fix squeezed look

Hey cats.

I'm editing on Vegas 5 and burning on DVDA.
A friend at the network got me an SVHS copy of an episode of "Grey's Anatomy" that I acted in. He asked, "do you want it in 16:9?" I said sure, since I thought it would simply appear on standard TV's as letterboxed.
Joke's on me. I've tried rendering and changing project properties all over the place and my finished product always has us appearing as tall skinny people. No letterbox either.
Am I doing something wrong?

put the movie back into Vegas..and it should letterbox it automatically...then keep your project settings in the standard tv format.

Then choose which ever framerate your working with, and render it out in the 4:3 ratio and it should stay letterboxed.
