Help Please! MiniDV Capture issue!

Hey guys!

I'm working with a client to transfer many miniDV tapes onto a hard drive. Now, I previously had a ton of experience with doing digitizing of miniDV, but it's been years. (Thank god for solid state media...)

Basically, I have a no name JVC "Digital CyberCam" and I'm running firewire into my desktop. Now, when I use premiere, I have my capture settings as "generic device" and using the NTSC DV project settings.

Now, I can control the device through premiere, so no hitches there. HOWEVER, the strange part. Now, no image or audio seems to be coming through on the computer, despite my ability to control via the program. The even stranger part is that if I hit the record button, nothing changes, but when I stop recording, a message pops up saying something along the lines of "No Frames Recorded", BUT as that pops up, suddenly the video will display within the program, albeit only maybe 10 frames before the picture freezes. The video will continue playing with no difference on the deck itself, however. So basically, a brief amount of footage pops up for a half second after I stop recording nothingness.

Now, I feel like I'm close, because if the image is coming through at that point, and I'm able to control the device, perhaps I'm just missing some small, silly element.

I'm desperate guys! Need to get moving on this project very soon. ANY HELP would be appreciated. Thanks so much!!!

Soooooo, I wouldn't quite call it a solution, but I've figured out a workaround. Strangely enough, if I hit play on the camera, then open the capture screen, the video is displaying on the computer and allowing me to record. Still very weird though.

Still, if anyone has some suggestions/ideas (besides to avoid miniDV for the rest of my life), it's still welcome.

Thanks!
