Bag of Douche
Ok... this is pissing me off like none other.

I have been working on a video pretty much everyday over the summer - like mad. I ran out of space on 2 of my harddrives so I got a portable HD so I could work in uncompressed (lots of compositing, color correction etc - if I had worked in native DV the image would have looked... not the greatest)

Ok so let me set up the scenario here (yesterday)

Monte: YES! Final render... then Ill export to quicktime and post the vid up on dvxuser... now I can finally enjoy summer EVERY day rather than every 3rd day... mmm the beach... seeing movies everyday on the big screen *sigh*

Render in progress to portable HD

5 hours later - 60% frozen, "WRITE ERROR TO G:/ FAILED"

Monte: Wtf?

It had been getting slower for days now it was taking long times to render, but this time it actually froze and wouldnt work anymore. Ever since then I havent been able to do **** with it (i tried just doing a quick render so I could transfer to like my normal harddrive - so as to not lose my work)

Now I get up today try to transfer files because last night I kept having problems... so I left it overnight to sort of hopefully aleviate the problem. Now all of the sudden a little popup comes up and says "Windows failed to save the information in G:/"

I go - ok ****it im deleting everythign on my other drives and transferring everything... all 50 gigs of uncompressed ****. I go to find G:/ and i see it, click on it and it dissapears. I cant get windows to recognize it anymore...

The gods must have a sense of humor... Jesus - DO THIS TO ME ANY OTHER TIME - NOT ON THE GODAMN FINAL RENDER OF A HUGE ****EN PROJECT!

Anybody know what I should do? I know like everybody's gonna **** a ****ing brick cus I said it would be done by august 15th (and it would've been)....

Thanks alot guys

First - what do you mean by "uncompressed instead of native DV"?
Did you shoot this footage with the DVX? If so - it is native DV footage.

second -
I ran out of space on 2 of my harddrives so I got a portable HD
How big are these drives and how much footage are you dumping?
When was the last time you de-fragged?
How much free space do you have on the external?

Also - make sure you have no screensavers or powersaving measures turned on during long renders.

more info

no im working in uncompressed meaning I dont recompress every render - since there was a lot of masking and compositing work and multiple layers of CC and whatnot. So about 45 gigs of uncompressed on the portable HD.

THe other 2 are not portable and are 40 and 60. They both have footage from the 4 minidv tapes this was shot on. That takes up a huge chunk. Plus I have other stuff on there as well.

The harddrive has been slowing down as of late making clicking noises taking ludicrously long times to do stuff. It's dying i think

If the ext. drive is making unsual clicking sounds it then it's probably dying on ya. Better see if you can do a dump to a new drive fast.

You didn't mention if it was a USB or 1394 external drive, either way, there may be a solution. Find a different computer, one that this drive has never been connected to and then hot plug the drive into the new computer. If there are no hardware problems with the drive, then it should be "discovered" as a new piece of hardware and you should be able to look at the directory structure. If this works, then do a proper shutdown after unmounting the drive. The drive "should" now be usable on the origional computer.

And there are always drive recovery comapnies. Not cheap, but could be worth it compared to redoing months of work.

Speaking of which.. your statement brought to mind the movie "The Gods Must be Crazy." You guys seen that? Freaky movie man.

Now back to your regularily scheduled programming...

it's most definitely dying...DO NOT WAIT!
That clicking noise is the sign of impending doom...backup immediately and get a new drive.

PS. I have had nothing but trouble with portable drives especially the LaCie Porche series.
they are fine for data storage but video work...forget it

Hope everything turns out OK

godamnit. I cant move any ****ing files. This sucks donkey genitals.

Guess im gonna have to send it to be recovered.

"Its brand new monte I swear never been used!"

"The school treats our equipment like top of the line blahblah"

God it wouldnt sting so much if it didnt happen 60% into the FINAL RENDER! Agh! So angering
