Help on tripod legs???

Hey guys,

I'm very clear that the lowest one should go in terms of a tripod head is the bogen/manfrotto 501, and that's where I'm going to start. What I'm not sure of is which legs to get for it. I am hoping to stick to about 300.00 for a head/legs combo, and b&h sells several kits with the 501 (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=NavBar&A=search&Q=)but the legs, i'm assuming, are for photo systems. I've been on manfrotto's website trying to find out about the various sticks but the model numbers don't correspond (of course!)

I have no idea what to look for, or what features are necessary/helpful, in a set of sticks. I am a dyed-in-the-wool do-it-yourselfer-or-at-least-on-the-cheap, but a homemade pvc tripod or a contractor's tripod from home depot won't cut it i'm sure.

Any input on this? Of course I realize you get what you pay for, but as a film student, I really just need something adequate. Somewhere between acceptable and good, but not approaching good to incredible. The Millers and Cartonis are unfortunately not in my price range!

Any input is appreciated. Thanks.

Try to bump the budget a bit and get a little better sticks than what $150 will buy you. Spending even $450 to $500 total will get you into a completely different class. You could also consider the used market.

Personally I feel that a 501 on a set of 515s or 525s would be a great combo for a light camera like a DVX.

I am not a fan of tripods with center columns, they are just not stiff enough. Also, a ground level spreader design is much better.
