i'm looking into buying a scanners. Im mostly looking to be able to screen negatives and slides so i have looked at some of the lower end negative scanners, but i've also seen some flatbed scanners that can scan negatives as well. I would mostly be using it to scan pictures for the web or for editing. I would hope tho if i decided to print it out, i would be able ot get a decent 5by7 or maybe an 8by10. I really have no idea what to get and im really only looking to spend like up to about 130 so i know i cant get anything to high end. Does anyone have any suggestions? thanks.

Re: help on choosing a scanner

Like other computer equipment, scanner prices have gone down for any given level of quality. I've been using a mid-range Canon (9900F) flatbed scanner for a batch of slides. It gives me high enough resolution that I can easily print a good 5x7 (or larger) from the slide. In fact, these are 50 y.o. slides, and after touching them up they look much better than the originals. (It's important to have good software like Photoshop or PS Elements, because any imperfections, dust, etc. will be visible when you enlarge the slide on the scanner. Also be sure to clean the scanner bed very carefully.)

Pick a few possible brands and models, then look for reviews on Amazon, Epinions, and photography web sites.

When you're ready to buy, if you're comfortable with eBay, you might find a good deal there. Otherwise, consider a site like Overstock.com or the clearance sections of major photo dealer web sites like bhphoto.com. A recently discontinued model may give you more for your $$ than the latest version. Also check out the daily peripherals listings at dealnews.com
