Capable yes- fast enough- well that's a subjective question. Not fast enough for me, but I roll with a Quad Core Mac Pro. :)

The iMac will be plenty fast for you - do not spend the extra money. I've professionally done large HD projects on a system with slower specs than that iMac and it's been just fine. Yes, the faster systems render faster and are snappier, but that's expected.

The main areas where you'll see more speed difference in your actual working conditions would be rendering complex effects, motion graphics, compositing, etc. But the iMac will still be good for you. The other place you'd notice a speed difference is in how long it takes to render out files and compress to DVD, but this isn't a big deal unless you are constantly under close deadlines. If you can wait 20 minutes for the final DVD of your project to compress, you could probably wait 28 minutes, too... right?

Yeah you'll be good- and iMacs have good resale value if you decide to bump it up to the next level someday too.

I've done lots of FCS2 work on a G5 Dual 2.7, and it works just fine. Rendering, and particularly transcoding to DVD, are much, much faster on my 8-core MacPro, but routine FCP work is just fine on the G5. It was also pretty usable on my old Dual 1GHz G4. I even use a PB g4 1.67 for P2 transfers, and it can handle basic editing tasks just fine too. All the above were with 720P DVCPROHD, btw...

Of course, none of these computers will work with FCS3 except for the MacPro...

You should clarify - of YOUR three computers.

FC3 will work with any intel-based mac. The iMac you are planning on getting is intel-based. So you're good :)

I thought it was clear enough as I stated it, but yes, I was only referring to the computers I own that I mentioned in my post.
