Help me understand xmf files...

It's some kind of container format that is common, from my understanding. Tried exporting some material with it and file size seems decent, couldn't figure out any bitrate. Files aren't anywhere near uncompressed AVI though so I assume it's compressed?

Is it a good format to store finished work in? I usually go with HQ h264 but that's a trade-off, something with less compression would be nice.
 
Not familiar with xmf in the context of video, but that doesn't say much, others may be. But do you perhaps mean .mxf?
