Help me build my Dream Studio!

Alright, I'm still learning about sound so I'll try to say this as best as I can. I'm in the process of building up a computer system dedicated to editing (Im not sure if I will do 2 systems yet: one for editing video, and one for audio) ... I am also gonna build a sound room do additional diologue, voice overs, vocals...

I wanted to know which mike I should use and how I should go about hooking it into the computer I am building. I have Audition (Is this a good program to use for capturing the vocals?)

I wanted to hook up a keyboard as well. I was gonna use it in the hopes of creating my own soundtracks for my movies. Which keyboard do you recommend, program, and hookups.

Should I buy a mixer for this whole set up? -If so, which one?
and how should it be hooked up to the pc?...

I'm not on a tight budget (But I like to save money like everyone else...) I just want to rig a system to get great sound into my movies.

I'm sorry for asking so many questions, But I just want your expert opinion...

Re: Help me build my Dream Studio!

first of all, how ,much $$$$ you wanna spend, then MAC or PC, I would get (if your going PC WAY) a dual xeon prossesor, since $$ is not an object, get protools, get a motif keyboard, get a Neumman U87 mic, focusrite preamps, as far as a mixer, the Mackie onyx sounds good, 1604 and firewire out to PC or MAC with multitrack.... genelec or adamson monitornig system, it's all about the $$ you can get a 4000 system or a 200k system, it's all upto you......and how good you are

Re: Help me build my Dream Studio!

I'm gonna be building a pc and as far as budget, it's hard to say. Right now, I'd like to spend 1k on it, but I know that later on down the road I be saying to myself "Oh, you need to get this too", and "oh, it does this?! ...sh_t I'm gonna get this..." I first want to make the pc so avice on processors, sondcards ext... would be nice. And the keyboard, Mike, and mixer is coming next. (Is there anything else I need?) - I saw a thread on here about digital composer, so I'm looking into that as well...

Re: Help me build my Dream Studio!

I found midi work to be a total hassle on the PC so I went out and bought an old Atari 1040st. Atari are just built for this game. If anyone can give me a PC bombproof midi solution I would check it out though (just love to tinker) Im using sound blaster audigy

Re: Help me build my Dream Studio!

Well, I don't think $1000 is going to begin to cover the computer.

I have one big reccomendation that has nothing to do with buying gear....

Go learn how to do what you want to do. It's obvious that you really don't know what you are getting into if you don't even know what you need. Go take some classes. Read some books. That sort of thing. Make sure this is really something you want to get into before you spend the cash. Nothing bothers me more than when I have to deal with picture editors, or other sound editors that have no idea what they are doing. Just for a sound editing rig alone, you can think about spending at least $5K. That's a dual G4 or G5 (no pc's here. they don't work...period), Digidesign 002Rack, DVToolkit (which you will need), Mics, Cables, computer monitor, picture monitor (so that's two monitors, or one monitor and one tv), desk, mic stands, plug ins, good headphones, two extra internal hard drives, a couple external drives, and a good trackball.

Now, if you want to do picture editorial, you'll start with at least final cut pro, or some program similar to that, and you're looking at another $1000 just to get that running. Now, you can have one rig for picture and sound editorial if you are a one man band doing everything. A dual G5 is more than capable for that.

Again, I strongly recommend that you learn about this craft so you know what you are doing. Nothing burns bridges and ends careers faster than someone who hasn't a clue what's up.

""""I'm not on a tight budget (But I like to save money like everyone else...) I just want to rig a system to get great sound into my movies"""

1k is tight, very tight for what you wanna do, if your lucky you can get a digi 002 used on ebay for close to 1k, maybe a bit more.

Dave is very right on that article, learn about this craft, and read a lot, not only this post, but Magazines like MIX, POST, DV, etc...

Re: Help me build my Dream Studio!

lsdsound,

You don't have to get a digi002, a great board to have is the tascam FW1082 ~$800 bucks. The sound quality is superb and alos has automated faders, etc. Check the tascam website. I have the FW1884 which is a slightly higher model but theres no diffrence in sound quality. Check it out.

Re: Help me build my Dream Studio!

What DAW's can you use that with. I've been looking at those, but it doesn't look like you can use those with pro tools. Is that right?
