HELP ME BUILD MY COMPUTER SOLELY FOR EDITING

[quote author=reddPLANET link=board=Links;num=1090265141;start=15#19 date=07/21/04 at 09:05:22]thanks for the tips guys... if i decide to go with the g5, would you suggest holding out for the 2.5?  I can get educational discount, so that's good... it won't show up for another month, so that's a bummer, but yeah, what do you think?  the specs on the apple site show the 2.5 to be monsterously faster than its predecessors... especially for video rendering.  If I go with the g5, i'm gonna get the apple care just in case something goes wrong...

From a financial point of view, I would go for the older G5 over the newly released one. The 2.0 Dual, which used to be the top of the line, has gone down in price and you could probably do better buying that and putting the extra money into RAM and another hard drive. I remember looking at the prices of the G5 and shedding a few tears after I realized that what I got was was hundreds of dollars cheaper after just a few months... but I guess that is the life of technology!

As far as the Apple Care, I have been less than thrilled with them. They do not offer tech support for any extra product you buy (such as FCP) after the first 90 days. And when I have called to ask questions they haven't been too knowledgable. Also, they aren't open 24 hours, and it always seems that you have questions after they close. I guess if my G5 breaks then it will come in handy, but for the other tech support I have not been impressed. (I am comparing this to my Dell computer which has had some problems and the Dell Tech Support people from India have be awesome...).

For output to a Video Monitor (TV).
Would any video card with tvout work
in Adobe Premiere 1.5 Pro?
Or do i have to buy the expensive DV editing
cards from matrox, pinnacle, etc?
My Main purpose is just to view rendered
material on the monitor, nothing else.

Thank you.

Re: HELP ME BUILD MY COMPUTER SOLELY FOR EDITING

Funny I ran across this post. I too am trying to decide which way to go as far as platforms to use for editing. Unlike most here, I have not used any NLE's yet and am trying to get a feel as to which one I want to dedicate my learning to. When I purchased my DVX I later found that I will probably be getting a free copy of the Magic Bullet Editor program. But I don't think it will do any good if I go with FCP. So, I am in limbo as well as far as what NLE and OS platform to go with. In my case I will have to purchase new equipment no matter with way I go. It appears that the pc side NLE's have more plug-ins and available effects to give you more of a "film look" than what you could do with FCP. It that true? Or can you get as many with using FCP? I do know you could get Premier for the Mac and use the plug-ins for that but I was wondering if you would have more flexibility going the pc side. Sorry so long.

Magic Bullet Edtors works perfectly with FCP, as a lot of other filmlook plugins. Besides, the rest of them will work with after effects. You won't miss any plugins going the Mac route.

Re: HELP ME BUILD MY COMPUTER SOLELY FOR EDITING

Premiere Pro 1.5, AE 6.5, and Encore DVD all give you a firewire-out preview with just a regular OHCI card, you don't have to buy Matrox or Canopus card (in fact, I'm about to sell my Storm2).

If you're going to be working in conjunction with other editors, with shared storage or anything, go Avid Xpress or FCP.  Adobe's suite is definitely aimed at people like me, who (at home anyway) do everything--editing, compositing, authoring, etc.  Actually it's funny no one's mentioned Avid... it is the industry standard, after all (although losing out rapidly to FCP), and it runs on both Mac and PC...

What Platform are you more comfortable on?  I think that's what it comes down to.  I was comfortable with PCs and I knew I'd save a lot of money, and I can fix them, so I went with that. And Premiere Pro is finally a very solid editor, after all those years of blowing.

Re: HELP ME BUILD MY COMPUTER SOLELY FOR EDITING

I've never used a MAC, I have used PC for 12 years, and thats all I'm comfortable with.
Now with the firewire output in adobe premiere 1.5 pro, do i have to buy a professional monitor for that? I'm looking at the cheapest route possible, to output to a regular TV set for preview.
