No timecode info appears while playing my Mini DV tape so my FCP 5.1 won't capture it...it's just 00:00:00:00 while its running...
can't figure why this happened and dont know to capture it.
any solutions out there?
Thanks a lot!

Need more info...

Can you give us a little more information as to your setup? Specifically, what are you using for a deck and how do you have it connected to your system?

cheers.

I use a Panasonic GS200 as VTR.
I recorded MiniDV tapes from Sony PD 170 in DVCam mode.
I think I used different velocity settings (DVCam and Mini DV) in the same tape, anyway the timecode should vary but not dissapear, am I wrong?
Thanks for your concern Varicam Life.

No timecode in other devices?

No timecode in other devices?

You are correct about the DVCam/mini-DV issue. That is just a quality setting really. You should still have continuing timecode on the tape regardless.

Oh one question though I forgot to ask earlier, when you say no timecode, is that when playing it back in the deck? How about if you play it back in the camera on VCR mode, can you see timecode then? Or perhaps with another deck/camera, can you get timecode anywhere else? If so that would point to some setting in the GS200 being off (perhaps its in userbit mode, I don't know that deck well enough unfortuneately).

cheers.

no I'm not getting TC neither from the VTR (camera) or from the Log and Capture....I think somewhere in the combination between velocities and brands is no good at all, any way I just set the Log and capture setting to "no controllable device" and I'm doing everything at pulse...like in the old days... anyway if you know about something like this let me know... I hope my other tapes are OK...thanks again

Sounds really quite peculiar. Kind of hard to comment on it though as I obviously can't see the setup in person and have not encountered anything of the sorts. The one thing you could do though is get another camera or VTR and duplicate the master and then you'll get TC on your new tape.

cheers.

Interesting. I'm surprised they play at all. A Canon XL-1S won't playback DVCAM. Switch back to the Sony or use a Sony deck and you'll be all good.

FYI, our local cable company (who sucks, and in the really BAD way) transfered some Beta stock footage tapes to Mini-DV for our local Red Cross. We got the Mini-DV tapes with no time code. The cable company claims they haven't a clue why it happened. Point is, it can happen when going from one tape format to another. I know other local producers who've had this problem who don't ever touch FCP. So it's not FCP, it's the formats.
