Help ! Interlace Lines Showing up !

Heey plainman007 vbmenu_register("postmenu_919691", true); !

Nice description! Yes, You're right - what would graphic card got to do with Capturing thrue firewire..

I actually read article about .mpeg capturing; and there fowks had problems with ATI:

http://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1669512#1669512

But my problem is still here:

I shoot interlaced ( Panasonic gs250 ), I capturing interlaced, I edit in VEGAS using interlaced project..and than again print to tape in interlaced..

And than I went to TV station and they broadcast my video in their ( interlaced ) TV program.. and there are some interlaced artifacts ( at every moving action ) that shouldn't be..

And if I use PROCODER to create DVD.. I can watch the same problems on TV with DVD player.. or on computer..

:badputer:

So, if I understood You; it is the problem in VEGAS, and it can not be done better ??

So; what editing software / hardware I should use...and not spend fortune on Apple??

Greetings,

Hi Guys:

I just received some footage shot on a Sony Handycam that records to mini-DVD. The client gave me the finalized disk. I used Vegas' "import from DVD Camcorder Disc" feature to bring in the clips.

The clip properties indicate NTSC 720x480, 29.970, upper field first. The clips are mpeg2 format. If I preview these to an NTSC monitor I see interlacing artifacts through the firewire that connects my Canon DV camera (ZR20) to a Sony broadcast monitor.

If I render the clips out as an a AVI with upper field first and bring it back into Vegas the clips preview without interlacing. If I do the same and render as lowerfield first I see the interlacing effects again on an external TV monitor.

Field order is important as reversed fields will cause artifacting. Standards for NTSC are 720x480, 29.970, lowerfield first. Clips from my DVX 100b come in according to these standards. So in this case I can only surmise that Sony handicams use upper field first for some reason and Vegas is in fact detecting it properly.

If the clip properties show upper field firts make sure you render out accordingly.

Hi Scannon,

Where ever did Vegas detect it as upper field first. Its saying progressive. And thats a clip from a non progressive consumer handycam.

Plainman007:

I wasn't refering to your issue specifically. I was relating that different camera's can give unexpected clip properties. In my case the client's clips are NTSC 29.970 but with upper field first. Not typical for what you would expect from a consumer camera.

In your case your getting footage that reads progressive. In my case I rendered the footage out both ways as AVI's, Then I let DVD Architect recompress as Mpeg 2 and played it through a standard DVD player and TV to see what config was correct as this is the intended distribution format for the final edited product demo. In my case the upper field render removed the interlacing artifacts. This matched how Vegas profiled the clips even though I expected lower field first.

In your case try rendering a test using upper field first, lower field and progressive with interpolate fields. Add all three tests to a DVD and play on a standard TV you will quickly notice which one is clean of artifacts.

You have to render to see the difference.

I tried all those combos. Except writing to a dvd and playing back because i wanted a windows media file. And the windows media file was showing the interlace lines too. What do we do when we need it as wmv9 ??? I cant only distribute output on dvds. Different projects need different distribution methods. What do we do then ??

Also tell me one thing. Are VCD dat files progressive ? Is it possible to have a progressive VCD ? Because i copied a .dat file from a clients VCD. Vegas says its 352x288, 25fps, Progressive ! is that even possible ?

If you play interlaced footage using WMV on a LCD/computer monitor you will see interlaced lines unless your playing progressive footage. However, if its interlaced you won't see any lines on the standard TV (unless its an LCD) because it uses interlaced scanning.

Which is exactly what im saying too. Where else will one play wmv ? Its meant to be played on LCDs and computer monitors and not for TV. And how can i play Interlaced footage thru wmv. WMV is by nature a progressive format. I know that a tv works with fields. Odds and Evens for ming interlacing. TVs are natively interlaced. Except for some very latest ones that have progressive or DNIE etc. Anyway are you saying that if one has an ntsc interlaced footage he cant edit and render out a wmv9 thats progressive. wmv or any computer based avi format is by default progressive. So if wmv is showing scan lines that means vegas cudnt do a dime of a job deinterlacing the footage. Dont tell me no one renders interlaced dv out into avi or mov or wmv which are all progressive. Your saying if the fotage is interlaced then the wmv will show scan lines ? Wrong. I have done interlaced footage so many times earlier at different studios and they come out clean in progressive formats such as avi. I tried every alternate project setting in vegas and the footage didnt loose the lines in the rendered wmv. And the icing on the cake is it repeatedly says the interlaced footage is progressive. Which is so dumb for even a semi professional NLE. I love Vegas. Love the tool Set. Its the only NLE i spent a long time learning and learnt a little well. Love its compositing capabilities etc. But its cranky at times and not perfect and that can be a major let down unless we are doing just wedding videos. Professional work,,,, well we might get kicked in our rear for sporting this as a pro NLE. In the current topic theres no answer as to why its interpreting interlaced footage as progressive. Secondly, it cant deinterlace this footage at any project setting. I made a donkey of myself trying to make a newborns video of 20 mins. Just imagine if i did this with a client sitting next to me. Hmmmmm,,,, whats worse than a donkey with an NLE ? Ill leave it to your imagination. The sadest part is i plunked down a wad of cash for a workstation trusting this NLE just for one major project. Its a D-Cinema thing that we are doing based on our event management. It is going for projection at 1280x720p on a HD projection system. I invested the money thinking ill buy a powerful machine instead of spending it on the studios and edit this film myself. WHAT A WASTE. Thats nearly 2000$ to the drain + $600 on Vegas. In fact over the last one week its stutterng for playback even at draft settings. Just 20 mins of 352x288 vcd quality file on the timeline with no effects or anything and its dropping frames. I could have spent 600$ to edit in a studio and saved the 2000$. Hush im off to bed now to get this out of my head.
