Help inform me. Book maybe?

OK... I've had enough.

On set I always know HOW I like things lit, I just don't know the tech terms for the gear needed. The other day my DP was arguing with me about some nonsense, and I was attempting to explain why I didn't like his setup for this particular shot. He knows "all about lighting", and was not pleased with me telling him I wasn't happy with the current setup. He usually moves things around for me at the drop of a hat, but he didn't like me scratching everything and telling him to do it completely differently.

Well, as he walked away, I swear I heard him say: "Yeah, but you don't know anything about lighting.", in a derogatory manner. Ordinarily, I'd lose it and punch him in the face:evil: But under the circumstances, timeframe, and long day, I let it go...

The problem is, there IS some validity to his statement. I don't know what anything is called. I know the setups I like, I know placement of where I like things, but I've never taken the time to learn names of all the different lights I like to use...

Anyway, I want to learn the tech side of lighting. I.E. the difference's in all the possible lights out there: Dedo, HMI, Tungsten, fluorescents, etc, etc, the temp difference's of each, and whatever else it takes to be up to par on set with my DP.

I don't want a book about "painting with light", I want a book (or anything) on descriptions, pros and cons, and difference's between the leading motion picture lighting gear out there.

Any ideas? suggestions? advice? tutorials? anything?

if not, I think I'm going to have to :nads: my DP sometime in the near future

The grip book, by Michael Uva

and

The Set Lighting Technician's Handbook by Harry Box.

Both from Focal press.

I love this book, I got it for christmas last year and I can't even count how many time it has saved me from posting here some basic questions.

Checked out all of the above, and everything looks great. I'll research a little more and start picking.

Thanks guys. Invaluable info as usual.
