Help I need tips.

End of Fall

Okay I'm shooting a music video & I need some help, I tried to shoot this video now twice.

The lack of organization and soft focus on the LEX is killing me.

The band gave me a idea of running the entire song through as a WS, then do it in a MS, CU, etc. We ran it today about 6 times and I'm not happy with the idea of that.

I'm doing this so when I'm in the felid I know when to play the song so all I do is say, Action! -- Cut! Its a lot of work for me but I figured it'll make more sense in post.

I have a total of 2 scenes plus a location for the script to show a idea of what's going on..

Any ways heres the script shot list, what am I doing wrong or what can I do to make things easier.

1A: [1:00] > [1:04] don't know what to change into – WS :: dolly // Glen
2A [1:04] > [1:05] to impress – CU :: sticks // Glen
3A: [1:05] > [1:07] a girl like you – MS :: sticks // Glen
4A:[1:07] > [1:09] its beauty – ECU :: sticks // Glen
5A: [1:09] > [1:10] at its finest – MCU :: sticks // Glen
6A: [1:10] > [1:14] and shes in my bedroom - WS :: Dolly // Glen
7A: [1:14] > [1:15] shes taking – CU :: sticks// Glen
8A: [1:15] > [1:16] me down – WS :: dolly // Glen
9A: [1:16] > [1:17] the stairs – MS :: sticks // Glen
10:A: [1:17] > [1:20] into a hallway its not fair – MS :: sticks // Glen
11A: [1:20] > [1:21] its never – ECU :: sticks // Glen
12A: [1:21] > [1:21] been this – MS :: sticks // Glen
13A: [1:21] > [1:24] easy for me – CU :: sticks // Glen

14A: [1:26] > [1:28] but shes got a problem – WS :: dolly // Grant
15A: [1:28] > [1:28] and im – CU :: sticks // Grant
16A: [1:28] > [1:30] gonna solve it - ECU :: sticks // Grant
17A: [1:30] > [1:31] and i take him – MS :: sticks // Grant
18A: [1:31] > [1:33] by the throat and i hold him – WS :: dolly // Grant
19A: [1:34] > [1:35] and I hold MS :: sticks // Grant
20A: [1:35] > [1:36] him down – CU :: Sticks & dolly // Grant

Why not? This is the sensible way to do it if you want to be sure you have something that will edit.

Its a mess, I'm looking at the footage and I can't make heads or tails to what I have.

Plus the band gets tired really quick so I figured to do it like this so that they can save energy. Its a punk rock band, they put a lot of energy into the song which sometimes I think they do to much...

That being the case I figured maybe breaking it up would make it easier to look at the clips I have from scene to scene. I have two locations I'm shooting so I figured I would have a lot of angles, shots, and B-Roll to use....

Don't break it up this much. You need to have multiple things to cut to and they need to be able to get into the song, even if it makes them tired. This way you'll never get anything that isn't planned and it's going to look a bit...well...staged.

If you want to not have them to do the whole song all the way through, then just break it up into different sections where the song is distinctively different. If they can't handle 6 takes of the entire song, really...just get a new band or something as I assume this is a freebie. I've worked on bigger videos where we would run the song solid for 2 days...so, I'm sure they can handle a few times all the way through.

Also, who is your DP on this? Do you have one? Do you have an AC? These are all very necessary things and if you don't have them it's probably making your life a lot more difficult than it needs to be.

what we do is start wide, run the whole song, move in closer and closer doing the song, focusing on different band members / instruments.

unless we are 100% sure we don't need a certain shot in a certian part of the song, we run through the whole song.

and the opposite is true, if we are 100% sure the setup is for a specific part of the song, we only run that part of the song with wide, medium, close up.

that way we always have extra footage, if something does not work as planned.

If you insist on planning each shot out to a tee, I'd strongly suggest at least one shot of a full run-through. If a shot doesn't work out for some reason, it's easy to resort to that long shot as a replacement.

I think you should plan run-throughs, not plan the entire video before you know what you have. It just doesn't make sense. I've always had at least 10 takes of the song, anything short of that is nearly impossible to edit together a good song. One cheat is of course two cameras, and so usually I'll actually do 10 takes x 2 cameras, giving me 20 total takes, which works out pretty well. Anywhere 16-20 is great, though. And I've only worked with rock bands, a few songs pretty hardcore, so they definitely need a lot of energy but that's why you do the wides first, because the band has the most energy and they need their movements to be most exaggerated.
