I shot a documentary for a client, and she wants to view the P2 files that are on a HDD, she is not an editor, she is a producer, and does not have Final Cut Pro, only express.

Is there any software for mac thats low cost ( less than Final cut studio 2) and will let you view the P2 files?????

p2viewer

p2viewer

There is p2 viewer which is a free download from panasonic. They have versions for pc and mac. It works very well on my imac. There is also a free demo of a program, I think its called p2 log, but it's not very cheap.

P2CMS works great on my mac.

i also have FCP Studio, so I don't know if that is the reason P2CMS allows playback of DVCPROHD on P2.

P2CMS requires FCP to be installed before it can play back high-def clips. Don't know about P2 Log, it might not need it.

I think that all of the viewers need FCP installed so that QuickTime has the necessary DVCProHD codec.

Check out this ... Raylight ?

Check out this ... Raylight ?

It allows instant, direct editing of MXF files in FCP, or any video application on the Mac.

I have found your solution and it works real good i can play the MXF Files that are on the p2 card directly in quicktime with no conversion it works great !!

Raylight still requires FCP to be installed in order to play the HD files.

Basically the Mac cannot play the high-def files unless FCP is installed, as Dan said.

The simple fact is the Windows P2 workflow is better than the Mac workflow in all ways. The only reason to use a Mac with P2 is if you absolutely, positively, have to use FCP. For any other circumstances, the Windows workflow is just easier.

thanks Berry I did not know that!! I would just use a PC but our office is all mac. I wish that video was just more simple I come from a photo background and in photos there is really just a couple different formats of compression used and video there are so many different that My head is about ready to explode... this site is a life saver sometimes and i really love all the help !!!!!

Hmm....I've been able to copy codecs to a non-FCP machine
and play hi-def files no problem.

Copy this file from your FCP machine:
/Library/QuickTime/DVCPROHDCodec.component

I've also done this to copy the On2 (Flash) codec from a machine with CS3
to a machine without CS3.

Doesn't this work for you?
