HELP! Format issues - Screening Tomorrow

Hey guys,

I have an issue with quality. Just to provide some background knowledge on the project, I recently shot/edited my music video with the dvx100A in advanced mode. Everything captured fine and I was able to edit with no problems in my 23.98 timeline in final cut HD 4.5.

I had my color correcting session yesterday. I brought in the project on my Lacie drive, which was imported into final touch at 23.98. Everything went fine and we color corrected at SDI.

The guys told me when I load the proect back onto my computer at home (dual 1.8 G5) to change the timeline settings to 10 bit uncompressed 4:2:2. I did that, and the video played just fine and the color looked great.

The issue I'm having is with the DVD. I exported an MPEG2 (through quicktime conversion) and burned it in DVD studio pro. I know that DVDs do not look as clean as the playback on Beata, mini dv, or quicktime, but the quality looks
REALLY bad (lots of pixelation and highly saturated colors). Theun-color corrected version looks better when I play it on the tv.

So, I'm wondering if there are any compression settings in Final CutPro or DVD Studio Pro that I need to set (such as one or two pass VBR?). I'm also wondering if there are any other settings I need to change since I'm working in uncompressed 10 bit 4:2:2.

I've never used compressor before either. Maybe that's the issue? I am not too familiar with compression settings or DVD burning, so if there is anyone who might know what the issue could be, I would really appreciate your expertise. I'll be working at this today/tonight to try and figure something out.

Our screening is tomorrow, so I'm a little on edge. Thank you!

Don't use Quicktime Conversion. Just export it as a Quicktime Movie File and import that file into DVD Studio Pro. That should get rid of any extra compression it's putting on it.

Coffee yet?
Since it's a video clip (about 4 minutes video) as aravance says export uncompressed from FCP and let DVD Studio do the mpeg conversion. Select high quality settings in DVD Studio they must be somewhere.... However remember that the bit rate should be between 5000-6000kbps to have good quality and be playable without jumping frames.

Thanks guys for such a quick response. I just talked to the guys over at the color correcting studio. They said to use compressor and choose 60 minute high encode to mpeg 2 and try it that way. I'm going to try it both ways, with the final cut file export and the mpeg frm compressor and see which one looks better.

I'll post how it turns out :)

i think the final cut export will be the quickest and the quality should be higher, considering with compressor you are recompressing an already compressed video.

Tried out both formats....worked VERY WELL. It's hard to tell a difference, but the final cut burn was much less time consuming.
