I'm working on a project with 200++ mini dv tapes, how do I save from final cut to the external hd's properly. when ever I get done logging and save it reads, "error cannot find proper file such and such" and how do I go about converting the drives from wd to HFS. I got western digital 250 gigs external hds all linked together. when I get into a project all media goes offline. I've never worked on a project this big.

THANK YOU.

whats a 'wd' format? FCP is most stable with an HFS formated drive. If its FAT 32 or MS-DOS formatted the drives go wackie with long file names. I would take the external out of the case, attach the drive as a secondary drive on the IDE chain as a Slave drive. Then tranfer the data, if space allows to the main drive format the slave drive to HFS then copy back to the newly formatted slave...and leave the drive in the computer. The transfer rate and stability of the drive on the IDE chain is much more stable than through the firewire.

Yea these hardrives are being read as "ms-dos file system" how do I convert them too HFS format. THANK YOU!!

Derek.

Just as stated above...the conversion will destroy the data so back it up and use 'Disk Utility' in the utility folder located in the Applications folder. Chhose the drive to reformat. Then click on the 'erase' or partition tab. There will be a drop down menu to choose the format volume type. Choose standard HFS or jounaled, I dont think it matters which you choose. Then go to the partition tab and do the same thing. To initialize the partition. You may be able to do it all in the partition tab. It wont matter since your data is safe on another drive. You wont lose any data. I suggest you disconnect all other external drives to be safe. And I would put the drive in the case as a slave for reiability.

Heres a pic I took for you to help

For media drives selected non-0journaled so no additional speed penelties.
If you're not using with OS 9 (old software/classic) then you don't need to install although you coudl if you wanted the possibility at some point.
