HELP!!!!! Editors, anyone, I need help badly.

I have FCpro 7 & I shot to HDV tape in 24p on the Sony HVR-Z5U a wedding for a friend of a friend. The guy used to be an editor & thought if he hired me to shoot for him, he could get back into editing. I shot it & now I cannot get FC pro to upload the HDV tapes. I usually go tapeless but this time I was working a job & the editor borrowed my Tapeless device to edit so at the guys request I shot the wedding to tape.

Can someone please help me by listing step by step instructions on uploading the footage using either final cut pro or I even downloaded the trial version of Adobe premier pro CS4 to try that but Im clueless & it looked like it was uploading but later I tried to find the video files & there's like two 3 second clips. I shot 3 60 minute tapes so I don't know where that footage went. Im not a good editor at all, just a good DP.

Im stuck & I just need to get this footage in the best quality settings in a FCP file on a hard drive for this guy so he can edit his own wedding. I've even asked editors I know & theyre baffled why its so difficult to upload an HDV tape with out the iLink (which down converts footage to DV) connection. He's geting frustrated with me & I dont know what to do to just egt this at a HD quality upload in FCP. I mean the cam shoots to HDV tape, why is it so hard? Im a complete Kook with FCP, I didnt even make any money on this just a favor to a friend & now Im stuck & might have to give the little but desperately needed money back to this guy. I have a new baby on the way & struggling, I cant afford it. Just stressing. if anyone can help?

ANYONE, pI would really appreciate it.

First you need to set your capture preset:
Final Cut Pro>Audio/Video Settings>Capture Settings should be HDV or ProRes.
Device control playback should be Sony HDV Firewire.

Make your project and all that, than go to file, log and capture. Everything should start from there.
Be sure that when you plug in your camera via firewire, make sure the camera is off, than plug it all in, than turn it on.

I'll try that. a friend tol me I should set the capture setting to pro res llc or something like that. My friend has tried that too tho but it wouldn't recognize the camera for some reason. Im going to try to start from scratch. Oh yeah Im using a firewire 800 cable.

My cohort and I just recently ran into similar problems when trying to capture HDV from a Canon AX H1... We needed to unload the tapes in a pinch so we ended up giving up on FCP and dropping in Sony Vegas (rather easily I might add - and I'm fairly new to Mac but I'm a big FCP advocate). I want to say we set the capture settings to ProRes and actually got the process going but had MAJOR issues with dropped frames... Hope you got it all figured out. If so feel free to post the details of the trial and error process for the rest of us newbs!
