Help! Digital audio dropouts from VHS to FCP

I have been transferring regular VHS to my FCP 5 through the S-video output of my Sony VO5800. It goes into the S-Video on the AJA IO. The audio goes out the Sony RCA -10dB jacks, loops through an unbalanced to balanced audio converter which boosts the audio to +4 XLR, into the analog inputs on the AJA IO.

So, when I output older 1980-1993-vintage video of weddings, parties, Bar Mitzvahs, etc, to my FCP, on occasion, I get these horrible, one frame audio glitches. They sound like overdriven digital screeches. The dB meters go into the red. The video seems to drift out of sync, too, after such a moment. I noticed they occur at edit points, like insert edits from an old linear editing system from that era. When I listen to the audio directly off the tape, I do not hear the glitch. Yet, when transfered, it is there. Any ideas why this is happening? I am bringing in the signal at DV NTSC, 48KHz audio. Newer VHS tapes have not been a problem, just the really old, 15-28 year-old stuff.
