Help developing a "B" Movie look with dv

Hello.

just for the hell of it i think my next short will be sort of a "B" movie. don't know why, not even my type of movie normally but i think i want to do something different for a bit of a challenge.

i was thinking of going for a really specific look, for starters i was thinking of using a coral filter and trying to give it an older look, hard to explain but i saw a short on IFC called mullit? that had this yellow/orange look that i think was probably a coral filter, or something close.

can anyone suggest anything i can do maybe in the camera settings, or in the lighting to experiment with specific looks?

i have zero experience with lighting and i thought this might be a good chance to get my feet wet so to speak.

Hey,
If you can post some grabs I bet we could nail the look. Post 'em here or eMail me.

well the filters i was able to get are the tiffen coral 1/4 1/2 1 and 2

and i got two tiffen fog filters including a fog 2

it is supposed to be a thriller - not too horror - more suspense.

a LOT of it will be shot at night

its hard to come up with a look, i need to do the one thing i never do, test test and more testing.

the hard thing is knowing where to start, like what settings to focus on screwing with.

i know the ped is one, barry mentioned chroma but not which chroma, i have the dvx-100a and it has two chroma settings.

i know so little about the gamma settings, the v or d ?? what is the real difference.

i was also thinking of putting gel's on the light in a car, the car is supposed to be sinister, so i was thinking of taking a 100 watt mini frezzi and putting it down low in the car and putting an amber? gel on it and then putting a big piece of foam board from staples on the ceiling to reflect the light so the end effect would be a glowing color in the car.

that and the coral? and fog filters might look neat? or would it be tacky and hideous?

guess i'll have to try it this weekend!

Actually, I think you’re going to want to start with a high-quality clean image and do the work in post. Especially if you’re shooting at night.
