Help deciding

I've been reading constantly and can't decide between the Audio Technica AT897, the Rode NTG2, or the Oktava 012. I've listened to so many different comparisons that I can no longer distinguish any of it. Will be shooting shorts in and outdoors, so I'll have to buy a boom and the other accessories as well. Any opinions?

Don't know if it helps your decision, because everyone's needs and situation are different, but I was recently faced with a similar decision. I went Oktava. I just had my Oktava arrive today and I can't wait to use it. My next 2 short films have the bulk of their dialogue scenes indoors so that helped focus my decision. I do plan to add a shotgun at some point, but right now I have no problem making the Oktava work outdoors when I need to.

Between those 3, My vote would be for the Rode. It will work indoors just as well as out. (you need proper wind protection outdoors for anything though)

If you get the oktava, make SURE you get the Hyper-cardioid capsule, also, it is the most susceptable to handling and wind noise out of the three.

The Audio Technicas are great microphones. We use the AT835b and have had zero problems with it. The Rode line is also a really good brand. Wind protection is need for most microphones regardless of brand. Sounds like most people are down for the rode. I'm an old Audio Technica guy.. -John

Audio Techna over Rode Id choose personally, I mean the Rode for the price, is good but I don't know I really never liked the thing maybe it's just the name =D

Oktava if you know how to use it and have the RIGHT GEAR for it, can perform FLAWLESSLY I've used that little thing for so much. The accessories for it (wind prot, shockmount) will almost cost more than the mic but I still love the little guy. And it's so cute!

As for the Rode it IS good FOR the price =) Hopefully you'll get more money down the road (no pun intended) upgrade. Personally think future too. The Oktava is a mic I'd still use, NOT the Rode. Even with better hyper/shotguns/indoor mics for some projects my little friend Oktava and I will catch up on things. The NTG2 - I sold, once I got even an AT4073a the NTg2 never saw the light of day. But that's me... (and I never did try the AT897)

before you decice, buy the DVXUSER DVD: http://dvxuser.com/articles/dvxshop/SoundDVD/

I got mine yesterday here in South Africa, and the quality of information is top class!!!

After watching that you will have a better understanding of what mic to buy for what situation, and also know the best technique to use that mic to it's fullest potential.

It's really worth alot more than they are asking for it!

okay, first off, the rode and the audio technica will generally not sound good indoors. From a budget standpoint, I would go Rode AND Octava with the hyper cap. You will need wind protection for any mic you use outdoors - and not the foam thing that comes with them, but a real blimp/windsock combo. The K-tek k-zepp is a good option there.
