Help! Capture from one computer plays different on another

Hi,

I captured 24pA footage from the DVX100A into my Final Cut Pro 4.5 HD system (running on a 867mhz single processor) with all the settings marking 2:3:3:2 pulldown and all settings for 23.97. The footage looked excellent.

When my friend took the drive (which their project is saved on) and played it on her 1Ghz Powerbook, the quality was sufficiently lower, jaggies and "movement" in static footage were going all over the place.

i know the problem didn't take place in shooting and I correctly input all the same settings on both computers...what gives?

Anyone...anyone?

xxx Jonathan

What did you both view in? FCP, QT, etc.
QT will play at 1/2 res for DV footage unless set to high quality.
FCP may play lower quality depending on machine and settings.

Viewed on FCP 4.5 (same version on both computers)
Both are set for high res viewing
the 867 played it fine...the 1ghz (the faster newer machine) won't play it correctly

strange, right?

I have answered my own question...found this info

Pull-down insertion If you’re editing a sequence with a 23.98 fps timebase and you want to output to an NTSC device via FireWire, you can choose one of three pull-down insertion patterns from the RT pop-up menu in the Timeline. Pull-down insertion is a method of converting 23.98 fps video to the NTSC standard of 29.97 fps video. Depending on the speed of your computer, you can select from 2:3:2:3, 2:3:3:2, or 2:2:2:4 pull-down.

My computer is a slower machine and I noticed in the timeline RT button it won't let me choose anything but 2:2:2:4, even if all my other capture and presets are marked 2:3:3:2.

Does this mean I have to get a faster computer? I don't want to own a DVX100A and not be able to edit and export its full quality capabilities...

You won't be able to dump through firewire to standard video without the 2:3;2:3 pulldown added.
You can still make DVD's if you have DVD Studio Pro.
You could add in pulldown if you have After Effects or other package.
Once converted load into FCP and play out normal.

My 867 Powerbook won't do a 2:3:2:3 pulldown on export, either. You could purchase the Standards Conversion software plugin which will allow you to export an NTSC Quicktime with the correct pulldown. Sells for $99 from Nattress.com

Otherwise, you'll need a faster computer. 1.25Ghz works fine in my Mac Mini.

Thanks Scott + Wells,

I'll make DVD's until I can afford a new computer I guess...

I thought the MacMini was discouraged in working with video?
