Hi everyone,

I need some help with FCP and DVCPro HD. I am working with version 5.1.4 of FCP and using a Panasonic HD1400 deck to output on. I'm trying to output my 23.98 footage onto a DVCPro HD tape but I cant get it to work properly. The footage was shot on 720p24 and the deck is set to 720p with a 59/60 frequency. When I output to tape, I can get my footage on, and it transfers to a 59.94 framerate (because it has to, to exist on a DVCPro tape) but when I try to capture that footage back into FCP, it wont convert back to 23.98 footage. It's stuck at 59.94 and I dont know why. I tried playing with all the settings during output and during capture but nothing seems to work. When I capture the original footage that was shot on the HDX900, the footage comes out as 23.98 fine. The pulldowns get taken out and everything is groovy. I tried using those same settings to capture what I just outputted, but it stays at 59.94. Does anyone have any answers or help? TIA.

Hey. For anyone who read this and is stumped. I found out a way to get it to work. FCP doesnt insert flagged frames when you just straight output so what you need to do is set your deck to accept external timecode and set the output timecode on FCP to sequence timecode. This will force sequence timecode (23.98 if you're working in a 23.98 timeline) into the 59.94 data stream of DVCPro HD tapes. Then, when you recapture, FCP should flag the frames back to 23.98.

Set the output timecode on FCP to sequence timecode.

Where is this exactly? I couldn't see what setting you were specifically referring to.

Also are you going back to the 1400 simply using firewire? Or do you have a video card with like HD-SDI and RS-422?

cheers.

I'm going out via firewire.

What I meant when I said,

set the output timecode on FCP to sequence timecode

I meant,

set the 1400 deck to accept external timecode (which will be generated by FCP) via the little switch in the front and then set the sequence timecode to start at the appropriate time (if you are adding to the tape and not starting from a fresh unused tape). By doing that, you wont get a timecode break on the tape. When you use the "edit to tape" function on FCP, the sequence timecode should carry over because the deck is accepting external timecode.

Also... the main editing system has a card that accepts HDSDI and RS422 but I'm not on the main system. We were doing outputs earlier on that system via HDSDI/RS422 and it worked fine except that on recapture it wouldnt go back to 23.98. I assume that if I had set sequence timecode to run onto the tape, it would have worked fine.
