Help - avoiding lengthy conversion process?

Hi, this is what im trying to do:

I have a lot of divx/xvid files on my pc, i want to take bits and pieces from

each and do some editing in vegas then render back to divx.

The thing is, like alot of people, my vegas simply hates these files and will

crash when i try to load them (I've tried that 4cc thing, still buggy). So

what i'm planning to do is take the pieces i need from each in virtualdub,

encode with huffyuv, put those in vegas then back to divx.

If i have to I will but the whole thing seems particularly tedious and my HD

space is a little limited. Anyone know how i can avoid this? i've heard about

frameserving but i know nothing about it. Just figured i'd try here first for

advicebefore i start.

Also, if anyone knows a good player for quickly skimming through an avi it

would be appreciated, i have hours of footage and i'm looking for little bits

in each, its really time consuming, wmp fast play feature never seems to work.

Thanks in advance for answers to both.
