Help - 82mm thread question

I just got an 82mm screw on B+W UV filter for my HVX200, but it doesn't fit. Am I an idiot ... when I take off the lens hood, there's another piece (that seems to have 72mm thread on it) that doesn't fit the filter.

Everything I read said that the HVX has an 82mm screw on ... what's the deal?

If you take off the lens hood, you should see the 82mm threads of the lens -- there isn't anything as small as 72mm on the HVX.

Measure the filter, it should be about 3.2" across if it is a 82mm filter. All the B+W filters should also have the size on the brass ring.

There is no question it's 82mm - are you sure you didn't get sent a DVX (72mm) filter by mistake? Is it too small or too large to fit?

That's what you ordered, but is that what you received? Rather than going back and forth, can you just check what it says on the side of the filter?

Here is a crazy thought: how are you taking off the stock hood?

Are you loosening the single set screw on the back of the hood and then removing the hood from the bayonet mount, or are you removing the four tiny Philips Head screws in front of the stock hood?

Well, that's right. I'm wondering if you have a mislabeled filter. Can you measure that to see if it is about 3.2" across?

It is 3.2" ... let me ask you something. If you look on the bottom of the front of your HVX, does it say in white letters "82mm - 72mm"?

Or did you (or anyone else that used your camera) ever use a step-down ring, maybe to use a 35mm adapter, and it was left on the camera when the stock hood was put back on?

Bingo! You have a step-down ring installed!

That's wierd. You're living the nightmare I was having when I ordered my polarizer. Except that mine fit. And yes, I ordered an 82mm.

The camera doesn't come with a step-down ring, and even if it did, it wouldn't come pre-installed. Someone has used that camera before.

You should be able to twist it off like a filter. If it is stubborn, put on a rubber household glove, press your palm against it, and twist your hand counter-clockwise.

This is how it looks with the mounted B+W filter (oh my god - that dust on my lens!!!!)
