Hello,

I'm Davie and I want to start making films. I have a Sony Handycam, a nice computer, and Magix Movie Maker editing software... Why aren't I making films you ask??

Because I can't write screenplays and I simply don't have any actors.

I tried getting into a college but they won't let me in because I'm too young (graduated school 2 years early) Besides, there aren't any filmmaking schools in Oklahoma...

I would ask people from my church but it's kind of hard to just walk up to someone and ask them if they want to write a screenplay or act..

Any suggestions?...

Thank you..

God Bless,

Peace

Network. Look for local actors groups or theatre groups. Most good sized towns have something going on. Ask your friends to help you out. The first movies I made were done with all non-actors, but we all had a great time and learned a lot.

In the mean time shoot what you see just to practice your camera work.

Hope that helps, and Welcome

You can't be shy in this industry. If you really want a team, you have to go out and start talking, networking. Or you can pray, :) but really best advice is to go out and network. Or you can always come here for advice and tips, etc. What part of Oklahoma are you from?

Oh yes, Welcome to DVXuser.com.

I'm a composer and a programmer in training and I have a disability which keeps me from being social so I do most of my work alone therefore I think I probably am too shy for the filmmaking industry.

Tulsa

Thanks for the feedback, everyone.

Peace

Dont give up that fast! I think there are plenty of "film makers" that are shy and/or dont work with large groups of people. You just have to find a system that works for you and your situation. You don't write? Write something, or steal someone elses stories (its called making an adaptation). You don't have actors? Do you have family, friends, pets, scissors/paper/clay/GI-Joe? I think the greatest "film makers" are really creative problem solvers.

Hey Davie-

I'm in Tulsa as well. There are "filmmaking" programs at some of the local community colleges you could check out. They're not going to be at the level of say NYU or USC, but it's a start if you're really set on learning in school.

Welcome to DVXuser.com, Davie!

Check online for your local film office (Tulsa has one, I'm sure). They should be able to help out with local boards such as this one where you can network with other enthusiasts and professionals. There's a great many roles in filmmaking, so don't give up!

The simplist way to bet into shooting, without actors etc, regardless of your situation is to start doing documentary shoots. It doesn't matter what they're about, people coming and going in a mall parking lot, it doesn't matter what subject, and you'll learn.

Also, the Tulsa Final Cut Pro Users Group (and general filmmaking group) meets every third Tuesday of every month at the Hardesty Regional Library at 6:30. Good resource to meet new people and learn some things.

Not good enough, either overcome your shyness, or find someone to be your producer.

You graduated early so you have a golden opportunity here; spend the next 2 years shooting everything. Short pieces, long pieces, weird pieces, as Pookie said, shoot anything, then sit down and edit, play with the images, see what you can discover, have fun with the light. When you’re not doing that, write, write, write, then write some more, find a mentor and just keep writing, it’s a learnable skill, it just takes practice. If you play your cards correctly you will have some great shorts by the time you start college and a completed feature script that you can hone with your scriptwriting teacher. Heck, by then you may not even need college. (though I recommend it highly)

And welcome to the boards =)
