hello, my name is Richard Johnson and I'm an alcoholic.

Isn't this enough reason not to drink?

Do some research on children of alcoholic parents.

I am a child of alcoholic parents. And I know from years of personal and professional experience that sometimes it's not that simple. If you are addicted to something it defies logic, it defies emotion, it defies everything. You can have great reasons to stop and sometimes it is not enough. People sometimes mistake addiction for a lack of willpower, manhood, or judgment. It is in fact a disease.

I'm not saying this is the case with Richard. Just that the view from the inside out is different from the view outside in.

Richard J. Johnson
AKA "Dick" Johnson
Like hell it's his real name...that's a pseudonym if I ever heard one...What's the"J" stand for, "Junk"?

Thanks for the support guys, (well except for that Callaghan guy:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)) I'm gonna need it. Today is day one and I've looking into areas of support and other groups as well. This crap has got to stop. My 5 year old daughter drew a picture of the whole family and Daddy was holding a bottle and smoking a cigarette, Broke my damn heart.

You can take Callaghan as a Cautionary Tale.

Just kidding, just kidding...

Wow, the picture with the bottle is...sobering (no pun intended). I know people whose kids have been instrumental in helping them kick drinking, smoking etc. You can do it, for her!

what types of alcohol are you drinking?

1 glass of red wine is what I do occasionally and since my threshhold is so low it already gets me drunk....but I see the risk if you cant stop until youre blasted!

AAA supposedly has helped a LOT of people....

its a very good sign that you realized your condition, its the first step and I am pretty sure you are going to come out of it!

!

I think he means AA (Alcoholics Anonymous), and yes they have helped millions of people. Every twelve step program is based on their original model. It will work if you work it!

I've rarely drink, but there are some things I do like on occasion. Keep in mind, I'm the type of guy who smoked his first cigarette, acknowledged how it could be addictive and simply never did it again. (Question is can I do the same thing for Ice Honey Buns and Doritos). What I can tell you is this one thing for sure, leave "leave the situation." If you think you're addicted to something, don't get into situations where the substance is around. Let your friends know. If they're good friends they'll have your back. We had a party once where we realized a person was getting way to drunk and kept asking for drinks. My other friend simply said "Let him believe he'll get that drink." People simply said, "Yea, we'll get that drink for you." But it simply never came. Dude eventually went to sleep. LOL. He wasn't an alcoholic, but when he did drink he was known to drink way too much. But your friends should be able to watch out for you. I think there may have been alcoholism in your family and your mom knew it and that's why she told you never to drink.

If drinking affects your spirit and life negatively then you probably have a problem.

I quit 12 years ago. Lots of meetings, prayer, and appreciating what's important. If you have a wife and kids, they deserve a sober husband/Dad. Give them your best.

I knew my friend was an alcoholic when she said, "I never drink before 5pm." You see, people who don't have problem don't sets "rules" for themselves (heard that on the Oprah show).

First step is acceptance.

Second step is to get help. Robin Williams is an alcoholic, he took his family away from the Hollywood scene. He got off the wagon once i think in over a decade. He can do it, you can do it.

Support groups. Friends that love to drink I would advise you meet them for coffee not at a bar. You might even lose a friend or two because drinking friends like to be with other drinking friends.

Begin to work-out. Let your body condition itself to health. Join a gym.

what types of alcohol are you drinking?

Vodka and Redbull or Vodka and Lemonade. nothing else ever.

What exactly are the effects of Vodka and Redbull? Why is this so popular? And is it maybe an effect one could get from the Redbull alone, which isn't good in itself, (I stopped Redbull after some reading on it as I was going to buy a case of it for my work outs a couple years ago). I'm just curious. I still like to go out every once in awhile and get my dance on. I hear people order these Redbull drinks. What's the deal?

Vodka and Lemonade I assume is just a taste thing? Does the alcohol actually add a flavor in itself? Friends used to say to me, if a drink is made well you won't taste the alcohol. And I would question them as to why was the alcohol needed in the first place?

What is the draw? Certain drinks I like are good, but the alcohol flavor is something I can take or leave. Is there something specific you like about these drinks? Specific effect? Taste? Craving? Ect.

The Holy Grail of vodka is absolute tastelessness.

Or Absolut Tastelessness, as the case may be. It's not supposed to taste like much of anything at all.

vodka and redbull is a deadly mix! redbull is full of caffein which works like an antagonist against the effects of alcohol! this means you can seemingly drink more when your level of poisoning is already at a critical level. alcohol de hydrates you! First of all never drink these power drinks anymore! drink lots and lots and more water!

yes I meant AA you already did the most difficult first step @ AA = outing yourself, so going there should be a lot easier for you :-)

I wish you all the power you need to change your life and your attitude towards it, you made a very bold first step, now take the next ones ....

...Find some new friends who don't drink or at least not as much.
...

Yeah, actually that's a bit harder than you think. If your lifestlye is based around your habits, and I'm not just talking drinking.

I've had this discussions before. In the case of another person, giving up the habit meant giving up all of thier friends and thier lifestyle. Not so easy to do.
In fact it's a bit overwhelming if this has been your life's style.

I think Richard that you can handle this. It doesn't sound like you have years of addiction behind you. It sounds like you caught it at a time when you can deal with it.

You sound fine man. And you have kids so that's a little more motivation.

Good luck man. I don't think you'll need it but sometimes it's cool to talk about it just to get that feedback. Sounds like your on the right track.
