Hello hello (Camera question)

Hey everyone,


Long story short, I'm an aspiring filmmaker from KC, MO looking for a forum to read up on.

My question is, is there a good camera in the thousand dollar range I should buy? I'm looking for a camera I can use for a long time.

What I want:
A nice wide shot (I guess 35mm? Whatever that is. What ever movies are shot in)
Possibly HD
Doesn't shoot like a home movie camera
Not a crappy LCD thing (The thing that comes out of the camera that you look at to see what the camera sees. I'm lost for the name of it and I don't feel like looking it up)
Long term use
Something an indie filmmaker would use (Professional or something)

Should I go Used?

Should I stick with Tapes or with digital

Should I go with Canon?

Canon XL2??

there are many different camera types/categories/tiers to choose from, all with their pros and cons. consumer camcorders, prosumer camcorders, ENG cameras, DSLRs, point and shoot cameras, compact cameras, film cameras, mid range cinema cameras, high end cinema cameras.

different sensor sizes, dynamic range and low light capabilities, color reproduction and color gamut. features and specs, input/output and accessories options.

You'll have to bare with me. I don't know much about Camera's so I had to kind of splutter what I'm sort of looking for. I'm just not sure where to begin looking and I'm afraid of buying an expensive camera that isn't all it should be.

all these camera types i mentioned may record in hd,

point and shoot cameras
compact cameras
DSLRs
consumer camcorder (may include viewfinder and image stabilization)
professional camcorder (probably used, may include viewfinder)


these would be within or near you price range, keep in mind some of these option are complete packages ready to shoot, other options may require more gear or accessories for them to function properly and would exceed your budget.
