Hello from the UK

Hi guys, Just want to introduce myself, I am Ryan and we have just started up a small hire company for film equipment here in the UK. I love discussing gear and the filmmaking process. I have been freelancing for 4 years now in both Camera and Lighting. I have always wanted to start a hire company that understands the needs of the people shooting films/promos/music videos/documentaries. The reason I have joined this forum is because I want to find out what kit everyone is using, what they are using it on and genuine experiences with different pieces of kit. I have my own ideas of what kit people would like to hire but there is nothing better than getting opinions from other filmmakers.

We would also love some feedback about our site Gear Up Hire and our current kit. Good or bad it all helps us move in the right direction.

Thanks,

Ryan

Hi Ryan, welcome to the forum. I'm also form the UK, I work at a video production company in Oxford. How long do you expect it will be before you can offer proper cameras? I can only seem to see a 7D at the moment which I can't see many people needing to hire. Have you considered finding out what gear people around you have and seeing if they are up for offering it as a rental on your site? This could make your catalog look a bit fuller without any investment.

Hi Ryan

Just wanted to chime in and say hello too, also from the UK. Originally down near Swansea but now Outer Hebrides.

I haven't really got any advice on the website front, but it does seem perhaps a little out-of-the-box & rough around the edges?

Is it Wordpress based?

Best Wishes with the new venture, always great to see fellow Brits on here.

Hi Guys, Again thanks for the great feedback. Videvo I understand what your saying with regards to cameras and I am glad to say we will be adding more very soon. Just out of interest what camera would you be interested in hiring given the choice? Ki-Ki we appreciate your opinion on the site, we are constantly looking for ways to improve as a business and will be developing the website further in the future.

Cameras are cheap to buy these days so most companies will just buy them so it may be worth looking at the high end of rentals such as the RED and Alexa but you are in a different league there and may not have the back-up to compete.

As with all business you need to do your business plan and SWOT analysis to define if there is a need for a certain product and how much income you can earn from it.

Hey Ryan, welcome to the forums, I'm also a fellow UK filmmaker, living in London. I can see the website is fairly new, with a lot of kit to be added. I'd recommend purchasing some new camera bodies for people to rent. I suppose lower end cameras such as Blackmagic, Sony Fs100, C100? You could probably make your money back quickly on cameras like those. Less financial risk than if you were to buy a RED or Alexa. Just my opinion though.
