Hello all ye fellow Arri users,

I just bought my first light…the Arri 1000w plus fresnel. I’m quite happy with my decision so far, as the fresnel lens has a greater effect than I thought it would…It has reached my expectations. I’m now looking to compliment it with an addition 300w…to start. I’m also looking at the light control options I can go with, and my first stop will be the scrims that are offered for this light. Do the scrims attach to the barndoors or only to the light without barndoors? If I buy a Rosco filter/diffusion pack, would I still find the Arri scrims useful? And lastly, what would I use a snoot for, and what wattage light would be most useful with the snoot, or should I buy a snoot for every fresnel I pick up?

Thanks in advance, Bruce

I hope I don't miss anything...

Scrims are not attached to barn doors, not with any pro lights. They are always useful, as they only affect light intensity, not light qulity. Diffusion will change the quality of the light. I have used both at the same time before.

Snoots are specialty items really, they just narrow your lights beam and fall off. I don't think you really need snoots for every light. I just use black wrap for making snoots whenever I need them, that way I'm not locked into only being able to use it with one fixture, and black wrap can be more custumized . If your in a pinch, try regular heavy duty aluminum foil.

Hope that helps!

Hi CardMaverick, I'm a little confused here but its not your fault, I'm just wondering can Arri scrims be used with the barndoors at the same time or should I just put an aftermarket scrim in front of this light?
Does using the scrims prevent attachment of the barndoors, or even the speedring, if I were to go with a chimera softbox offered with this light? Changing light intesity is like going to a lower wattage bulb, if i got that right. Its my first pro light so I just dont understand how the scim attaches or what i give up by using the scrim.

scrims slide in between the barndoors and the lens. Most lights contain barndoor holds, and the scrims rest against them. You wouldnt place a scrim on the outside of the barndoors. Most softboxes still allow you to put in scrims. If it doesnt, it's not a professional piece of equipment.

ahhh, good to know, that answers my question for the scrim. I am expecting the Arri to be the pro-light you speak of. Now, more about the snoot...if I can get it. Would one light people with a snoot or is it used for lighting an object, thats seperate from the talent, to draw attention to it...say a company product, next to the talent. And does one need great care when dealing with light intensity from the snoot? Snoots look tricky. could the snoot be used as a hair / rim light?

Snoots can be used for lots of things, it's more a question of what kind of image you want to create. I really don't think you'll need one, and if you do, its more effective to just create one out of black wrap.
