Helium Baloons for Helicoptor Landing

Has anyone tried this? Securing the camera to helium baloons for a very high in the sky shot..

I would be very scared to have by "baby" tied to baloons 150 feet in the air...

It would need to attatched to the ground veeeery tight. :o

See, now, I'd be more worried about it being tied very tightly to the balloons...

Who was the guy that hooked a bunch of ballons to a lawn chair and sailed over LA, I think it was in either the late 70s or early 80s. He took a BB gun to shoot the balloons out so he could bring himself down....he lived!!!!.....now that's a true American hero!...and a nut. He was up where the commercial jets were and the FAA was really worried if I remember correctly.

I think you need to do that. Then you will be:
THE MOST HONORED DVXUSER MEMBER.  ;)

Actually i don't recommend it or the balloons, the wind can pick up to higher speeds as you get away from the ground. Is the shot really need that much?

Re: Helium Baloons for Helicoptor Landing

That's a lot of balloons, even for a lightweight camera such as the DVX...

Re: Helium Baloons for Helicoptor Landing

Seriously, how would you control the camera? Pan, Tilt? Are you going to use a wireless picture transmitter back to the ground to view the shot and rig a bunch of lines to correct the shot? If it looks straight down, it will see the line in the shot. Lots of problems...

Re: Helium Baloons for Helicoptor Landing

Actually, I was toying with the idea of attaching just enough balloons to achieve neutral-bouyancy with the camera on my SteadyTracker. No worrying about holding it up...just keeping it steady.

It would be really silly-looking, though.

if it works, that's all that matters, airplanes looked funny 100 years ago.

Re: Helium Baloons for Helicoptor Landing

If something like this could be mastered, it could be a great accomplishment for all of us.. This is a shot that small wallets can't achieve.

Re: Helium Baloons for Helicoptor Landing

..i dont think the camera would have nearly enough control to get the shot you want at all up in the wind dangling down. i would reccomend just paying for a shgort time of operator and operation of a big cherry picker or crane from a construction equipment place. or you could check into paying for using a fire engine ladder. its not super huge budget to pay for time with one of these for just 1 hour to get a shot or two.

Or find a local RC club...there will probably be a member who would would love to built a platform for the camera. Probably a zeppelin-type design for stability.

If you're in an area with a lot of interest in film...said zeppelin-builder would probably be able to make a tidy sum renting/opertaing it.

If you're out in the boonies...probably not.

Hey, it was good enough for DW Griffith in Birth of a Nation.

Dan Selakovich's "Killer Camera Rigs You Can Build"  Has a plan for a helium balloon set up.  It seems pretty stable, with a certain degree of lateral control, although I've never used it.  He does mention that (aside from building the rig, which shouldn't cost much) you are looking at about 100 bucks in helium and baloons for a days shooting.  You might be able to get teh crane that Neil mentioned for a day for less than that.  I guess it depends on how high you want to go.  Here's a link to DAn's website if you want to buy the book (which I recommend all the time to people)

Re: Helium Baloons for Helicoptor Landing

I have made a rig for my Canon ZR40. I fly kites as one of my hobbies, and fly RC as another, so KAP (kite aerial photography) is a way I was able to mix both. I have only used it once tho, and only for around 15 mins. Results were mixed. I need to hook up my wireless video transmitter and use it for framing next time.

Come spring I'll use it more.
