Heavy lens support?

I have the nikon 80-200 2.8 and 17-35 2.8 lenses, both heavy. Was wondering what choices of lense (to rails) supports there are. So far I've only really seen the redrock and the cavision. Thoughts on these or others?

i'm using one of these:

there's a collar that tightens down with a screwdriver to really hold the lens down, so it'll work with your rig upside down, at dutch angles, etc. it also comes with a thin rubber strip that's placed between the support and lens to prevent scratching the lens casing. it's lightweight and height adjustable as well.

Thanks mate, that's the nicest one I've seen.

EDIT: holy crap, postage is US $50 worldwide.

What adapter are you using? I had the Geardear support -- which works nicely -- but sold it when I started using a Brevis. I support the Brevis and leave the lenses (including an 80-200) alone.

if you contact gerhard for a quote, he'll give you the actual shipping. i ordered his mattebox backbone and riser44's a few weeks ago, and shipping to ny came to $20. still not all that cheap, but it is coming from frankfurt.

I use the geardear but never bothered to use the collar. Don't even know where it is. I guess it would give more support at an odd angle.

Doesn't Redrock make one also?

I have the cavision long lens support. In retrospect I would get the Redrock one as all adjustments can be made by fingertip. Using an alans key makes it very fiddly to adjust the height riser - which usually the distance can only be determined when the lens is attached (when it requires imediate support).

Jason that sounds like a hell of a lotta weight to put onto the brevis (I realize the you've supported the brevis). Did the geardear not work very well? I like the look of the geardear as you can tighten it down and it's supporting the lense if you have it upside down or on a slant. Bit dumb how you have to tighten it with a screwdriver though but I'll just work somehting else out there.

I think the gear dear is a great design except for the worm gear tightening mechanism. Its just a black painted screw/worm gear used on automotive hoses and parts. They are cheap and look out of place on film equipment. I prefer to avoid the "DIY" look as much as possible, especially when a part like that is so recognizable.

Yeah we call them hose clamps here (as far as I know). They'd do the job well but you shouldn't need a screwdriver or any other extra device for that matter to tighten it.

The Geardear worked fine, although a thumb screw would've been nicer than the slotted for tightening the clamp -- of course, you only need to tighten the clamp if you're moving the cam a lot during a shot.

With the Brevis supported, the weight isn't an issue -- at least according to Cinevate. I've noticed no problems. Now, if I threw a 300 or 400mm on there...

Thanks a lot guy, I lent up buying the geardear lens support - $15 postage to Australia.
