Loki your GPA just dropped a few points (in my book), for not having seen it sooner. ....BUT you regained GPA points, for having acknowledge it's brilliance.
I just got a chance to see Collateral (I know, my GPA just dropped too, but I have a good excuse) and that one is definitely up there with HEAT.
Speaking of "rock." Sometimes Mann falls back on his Miami Vice roots. In Collateral there's some guitar rock music playing during a few scenes. I kept waiting for Crocket and Tubbs to walk in wearing pastel colored suits and sandals.
Mann is actually shooting Miami Vice the movie right now! Starring Farrell as Crockett and Jaime Foxx as Tubbs.
Heat is such a great film, on all levels. I thought Val Kilmers performance was utterly outstanding. I just wish it ended the other way around. Pacino and De Niro swap places.
(ever notice Pacino rarely blinks these days)
I thought Heat had it's moments, but wasn't much a film. I found it poorly paced, and I thought Pacino was more caricature than character. I enjoyed Kilmer though and DeNiro was DeNiro.
Heat was bacically just a big screen version of Miami Vice. If you liked Miami Vice, you loved Heat. If you didn't, then you didn't give a crap when DeNiro got shot at the end.
I have to say that Mann did an excellent job on the gunfight scene right after the bank robbery. I don't think I can recall a more realisticly choreographed M-16 bonanza. (Of course Pacino had the HK-91) There must have been many, many people placing squibs on that one, or they used live fire rounds and cut it in on some shots. DeNiro is no stranger to weapons and how they are actually used either, which lended more reality I thought - he looked like he was actually intently AIMING, and very quick to boot.
I think Mann directed the first Red Dragon, which was called "Manhunter" ( which no one has seen)with William Peterson from CSI now, didn't he? I actually liked the Hannibal Lector in that film better than Anthony Hopkins.
Naa. I said I liked the Hannibal Lector played in Manhunter better. He is an english actor named Brian Jones (I think?) He just gave me the chills the way he pulled off the part. Not to say Hopkins is not brilliant, he is. But it always boils down to the writing anyway, doesn't it? The former Hannibal did not have a lot of scenes, Hopkins has done all the latter movies- and he is also scary. personal preference....
Yeah, a lot of people on THIS forum have seen Manhunter, but no one I know outside of the business has! They don't even know there is another Red Dragon movie done 16 years ago.
