Heat wave effect?

I looking for a good way to produce heat waves in Vegas. An example would be if you were looking through a fire, just over the flames, then the object on the other side of the fire would fluctuate/distort due to the heat waves.

I don't mind trying the solution even if it's difficult. For all I know, there may be an effect in Vegas that will produce this.

Displacement maps.

Get footage of like fire for example..put that intop of your footage then go to the masking options and click custom.
A new window will open up with three options. Choose displacement map, then jus mess around with the controls there.
 
you know those things that caterers use at weddings to keep the food warm in the metal trays. get a couple of those and put them in front of the camera lens. yeah i know thats not it vegas, im more of a not do it in post kind of a guy.

I dont know about the displacement maps. But maybe u can try using the wave video effect which comes within vegas. Remember you can put the wave filter on 2 times to make a more complex waving undulation. Then use a soft feathered mask to restrict the filters effect to only an area above the road or whichever surface you want to show hot air on. I hope you are able to understand what im getting to.
