Can't find any related posts. Tried to use my iPhone to record my heartbeat and that was useless. Do I need something fancy or is there a secret trick to getting a heartbeat (resting, pounding, etc.)?
Well you can fake it. What most people think of as a heartbeat is generally a fake. If you use something like a stethoscope what you get is a bit slushy (you hear the blood sloshing through your veins). If you get the right location you might get something but... You can probably get some of the "classic" sound from Sound Dogs (sounddogs.com). I used to have a great patch for analog synths that worked, as an alternative you can get close to the mic and "play it" live on your chest and then just roll off the highs till you get it "internal" enough. What we usually do is get/ make a loop and then run it through a sampler so you can speed it up or slow it down to suit.
Yeah OC, lots of ways to fake the standard "lub-dub," but if you really want your own, you'd need a special mike that is shaped like a stethoscope (I _believe_ they're called "stethoscope microphones," of all things), or, you could try jamming something like a PZM right on your bare chest, and run it into a really high-gain pre-amp. But Noiz is right on, you probably just want a fake heartbeat that you could find on a sound effects CD!
If your heart sounds like THAT, it is time to call 9-1-1!
NB: NEVER attempt to drive yourself to medical care if you have symptoms of heart-attack or stroke!
Better to call 9-1-1 than have a friend drive you. Unless your friend drives an ambulance.
I used to work in a large med school, and in one of the big ampitheatres, they had little transducers in the backs of all the seats. The instructor had a stethoscope with a microphone and we ran it into a power amp which drove all the 250 transducers where the student docs could hold their stethoscopes to hear what the instructor was hearing. They had some huge 300 watt Crown amplifier driving it but it failed one day. I measured the system impedance and it was so high that I replaced that big 50 pound amplifier with a tiny box with a 3W chip in it.
I was able to actually get a decent heart sound by taping a lav mic directly the chest of the subject. It was then fed through a wireless mic system to the art gallery for a installation/performance art bit. I completely taped over the lav mic so that rustling/extraneous sounds would be minimized. The artist was "buried" by being in a grave-like pit that was then covered with plywood and leaves/branches. Then the gallery-goers were treated to the sound of her heartbeat. Pretty strange stuff but it worked!
