WASHINGTON - That Caesar salad you're about to eat? It's 800 calories, and that's without the croutons. The fettuccine alfredo? A whopping 1,220 calories. You may choose to ignore the numbers, but soon it's going to be tough to deny you saw them.

A requirement tucked into the nation's massive health care law will make calorie counts impossible for thousands of restaurants to hide and difficult for consumers to ignore. More than 200,000 fast food and other chain restaurants will have to include calorie counts on menus, menu boards and even drive-throughs.

The new law, which applies to any restaurant with 20 or more locations, directs the Food and Drug Administration to create a new national standard for menu labeling, superseding a growing number of state and city laws. President Barack Obama signed the health care legislation today.

I'll tell ya, I don't eat fast food, but I do semi-automated calorie counting on my diet, and some of the stuff I see people eat is astonishing. Honestly, just the calories from the soft drinks most fast food eaters consume would sustain most people. A large coke at a popular Burger place is 390 calories. My entire lunch today wasn't that much, and I had a double serving of Boar's head meat on two thick slices of bread.

Scary.

I think it's a good idea also.

Here in STL we have a gas station called Quiktrip... or simply QT. It's one of the best run gas stations you've ever seen... they only had a couple of them 10+ years ago... and now they're taking OVER... they're EVERYWHERE.

Well... they have these sandwiches there... that are like Jimmy John's (if you've never had JJ sandwiches... they're great, and seem to be super-fresh? healthy? maybe not?)... so anyway... I've been getting these QT Jimmy John's replicas for a while now... until recently I looked at the bottom of the package... HOLY SH*T... that thing has 760 calories and 60% of the USDA for FAT? The thing's a damn home-made style sandwich! You coulda' had Micky-D's for those calories!

Worse... they have these "REAL" shakes... including a machine that "makes" them... you take one out of the freezer... open the lid... put in in the machine... and it makes it like a soft-serve shake... so one day I got one (years ago now)... and as I'm finishing it... again... WTF? The thing has something in the neighborhood of 1100 calories!

Most fat people are fat because they don't investigate (or care) what they're eating and make choices based on what tastes good. The deluge of unhealthy options conveniently available on impulse makes information your best defense against bad choices.
