Headshot

Need someone to get shot in the head. Small hole in the front, spray out the back. It cuts to the head after the shot is fired so the hole doesn't need to appear, but the spray has to look extremely convincing or I won't bother showing it.

I've seen tutorials on using compressed air systems (insecticide sprayer and indymogul's version), but I'm looking for something with more substance. Both of those had an airy spray, I need something that can fling a respectable amount of blood. I was thinking of just throwing a cup of blood against the wall, but I can't think of how to hide that it's coming from the wrong location.

Well I have seen Indy mogul's tutorial on it and they do a pretty good job. If you wanted you could get like a super close up shot where you have a piece of like stretched out latex rigged up and you have a small hole in it where it cant be seen. Then you could do the air spray that way and just have it shoot out of the whole really fast. Then quickly cut to the blood splattering on the wall. And if you really wanted to spice it up do some make up on the latex so it looks like wrinkles on a fore head and maybe wrap the latex around a spherical object. (Like a bowl or something that you could drill a hole and feed the spray tube through that)

the best way I've seen (saw it on Dirty Jobs actually) is a "spud gun" type setup with blood in it instead of a potato. Created a very realistic splatter. I'm going to be making one in the next few months.

Robert Rodiguez uses a "guacamole gun" in his movies. Like a spud gun, it shoots a large wad of matter at someone.

I personally don't like it, as it looks fake.

You could use a spitball to make the hit (bullet entries are very small), then run a tube of blood up to the back of the head.

Remember, sometimes subtleness is more effective.

The scene in THE GODFATHER where Michael assassinates the cop and the other mob boss is still very effective. Yes, there is a lot of blood, but it was done with style and in a realistic manner.

If you are looking to do the shot from the front you can run a narrow pipe up the back of the talents shirt with a nozzle facing behind the body, at the base create a chamber for your blood, brain mix and with an air compressor force the mix up the pipe and out the nozzle, works best if the actor is near a wall for the splatter to hit.

If you are doing the shot from behind you can create a basic prosthetic that fits onto the back of the actors head. A brain like piece is attached to very thin cable, the brain piece is glued to a blood pouch and then you cover it with two flaps of hair side by side. When the cable is pulled the brain matter will peel back the skin/hair and draw the blood out with it.

It is hard to explain without visuals but I hoped that helped, they were two techniques used in the Dawn of the Dead remake. If you watch the DVD it is the special features, whole featurette on head shots.

I've used one of those big syringe style squirt guns filled with fake blood. It's a big clear tube with a big pistol grip plunger. I had it set up right behind the actor with another guy that would ram the plunger up at the right moment. This effect as someone else had mentioned, works best up against a wall. The final effect was very bloody.

As for the bullet hole in the front...I haven't quite got that one figured out yet. I couldn't get a good motion track on the actor.

how about a good 'ol squib. black powder and what not. make sure you do tons of tests first. the first time i tested one, i had it set on a plastic chair, and i blew a hole through it. I recommend a pyrotechnics expert, but if your careful you shouldnt need one.

Moderator note: This is dangerous advice. Explosives are not toys, experimenting with them without the correct guidance and training is a huge risk that is not worth taking. If you need pyrotechnics, you need a qualified Pyrotechnician.

Do not listen to this guy, squibs should be used by trained professionals ONLY. Hopefully the mods will remove that post before someone gets injured.

History of Violence

History of Violence

In A History of Violence Viggo mortensen shoots his brother in the head, The made this contraption that when he'd lean back on it it would shoot the blood out of the back and they just covered up a pre-made bullet hole in his head in post. Watch the behind the scenes. hope that helps!

Damn poor guy got his whole head blown of with that pee-shooter :) I did something similar but I used big gust of air to squirt the blood out and I used a moderate amount so it wouldn't look too fake. It turned out ok, but Andrew Kramers www.videocopilot.com is the cleanest and easiest way to do it. Good luck .

Modified Squibgun Blast

Modified Squibgun Blast

I was looking for something similar for multiple gunshots and came up with modified Spud guns and converted them using Home Brew Tubing, A Plastic 2L Soft Drinks Bottle, and Various Plumbing Components Including ( ball valves, Tee, Caps, etc..) a Shreader Valve, a Foot Pump and a lot of luck........oohh and lots of blood mix and chunky strawberry jam?

The result at 20psi was a blast!!!!

Hope this helps

Will be uploading videos of the result soon, in the meantime here are some pics!!!!!

P.S. The tube being approx 4-5 metres in length can be applied to the back of the head using suitable tape and used in the same way if you run it up inside the victims clothing.

Keep this site going, i have learnt a hell of a lot here????
