got an up&coming short in the pipeline, just for a bit of fun. it's an action comedy. filmed some tests this weekend. we're using Andrew Kramer's free web tutorials, (THANKS ANDREW!),

here's a little clip of a head explosion coz i know u guys like stuff like this, you morbid people

it's a little rough, no CC, i did the effect quickly today, just wanted to see if i could mimic the tutorial as my after effects skillz are pretty n00bish.

any comments on how we can improve it are welcome.
 
We're not going for realism here folks, basically the plot is a bunch of kids fooling around with nerf guns while watching john woo's hard boiled, then a gun actually goes off and takes a kid's head off in the most cartoony way as can be. It's just a stupidly, over the top, but hopefully funny & unexpected punchline. And it's for my little cousin's film coursework, so who cares anyway!

As for a real gun blowing your head clean off - i doubt it. I think maybe we'll leave a bloody stump just for some realism.

OH MAN OH MAN OH MAN! It was going so well, then the actors massacred the whole short.:crybaby: Anyways, did you film the actors infront of a green screen? Or how exactly did you take out the head?
 
P.S.T...

The head exploding was done in after effects, no green screen.

The acting isn't too great as it was improv and I had about 10 minutes of good light left at that location. The whole thing was a two man show, so unfortunately the cam had to be unmanned on a tripod and the whole thing was due next day at 7pm... I already got a ton of **** from other "dvx'ers" about the short on here... =) many hate it, but some like it! Next one will be better.

...just wanted to share the exploding head thing since "jamesh" was into the same thing.

how exactly did you remove the head without removing part of the wall behind them. Was the wall a still background?
 
P.S.T.

I just made a copy of the layer and offset it in time to show a blank wall. Then the "blank wall" layer was rotoscoped, faded and feathered onto the top layer, so when the head explodes, the "blank wall" layer kicks in and follows where the head "was" supposed to be. I think its a little different than Andrew Kramer's tutorial, but similar in results.
 
Nice! I did the same... Aren't Kramer's tutorials bad ass!?!!

Try taking the head off of the shadow too. Extra practice!
