HDV vs. DVCPro HD

Okay, so I am trying to grasp Barry's book, which is awesome by the way, but I want to get some input on a question I have.

Is DVCPRO HD uncompressed HD footage? Is HDV uncompressed or compressed? I uderstand there are differant codecs, but what is the best HD recording format? Even if you shoot HD-SDI, you still have to capture it to something, right?

My brain is fried trying to wrapo it around compression, color sampling, shutter speeds and frame rates!

Both are compressed formats. DVCPro HD is just not as compressed as HDV. it also uses a closed GOP format unlike HDV. Which is why HDV is very taxing on your editing station. if its a vs match, DVCPro HD wins easily for quality in its compression and color sampling. As well as framerates!

I know its confusing, I just sent out a 200gb .mov that had to be uncompressed 8bit codec from FCP from the HVX. Took me 3 days to get it to work. 3.5 hours each shot at compression.
