HDV to DVD or AVI - help!!!

Hello,
My film company recently completed its first short film, and our "cinematographer" shot the majority of the footage on HDV (hi-def MiniDVs) using a rented JVC professional-grade camera. (I'm not entirely sure of the make and model...sadly, neither is he.) We have made attempts at transferring the footage directly to my friend's Mac to edit with Final Cut, but to no avail.

It is now in my hands, and I have tried sending the tapes to three different places to transfer the footage to DVD (we have software that can apparently rip from DVD), but all of them have sent the tapes back to me. One of them said the problem lies in the format it was recorded in, that it looks like it was either in PAL or SACAM. Again, I asked our "camera guy," but he knew nothing.

So my question is this: what options do we have in converting to DVD or AVI? Anyone know a good, inexpensive place to send the tapes to? I considered renting an HD camera and hooking it to my DVD/HDD recorder as a last resort. And if anyone posting needs any extra information concerning the problem, I will do my best to get this info from my crew members.

Thank you,

Have you looked in to Lumière HD?

Last time I checked you needed it to work with the wonky JVC codec in FCP.

Take a peek.

Correct me if I'm wrong but it sounds like you're trying to archive the file into DVD for editing. HDV footage can only be read from an HDV camera head. The camera you used is most likely an HD110 or HD100. What you need to do is get an HDV camera (like the HV10 or HV20), put the tape in and capture normally into your NLE. JVC has no special "mode" like Canon so its tape should work in any HDV camera.

Thank you very much for the info! I don't think I can afford Lumiere HD at the moment, but I am in the process of renting an HDV camera to finish this process. Thank you for all of your help.
