I'm not too sure what I should edit with. I'm using the sony HVR-Z1U and this will be my first project i'm gonna edit with it. I have heard about ProRes but know nothing about it :S would appreciate any help on the topic :)

FCP loves ProRes. So if you`re planning a new project you should ask yourself if it`s probably better convert your footage in ProRes (or convert while importing) instead dealing with GOP-Files that overheats your CPU.

Cheers
Thomas.

how do i do it while importing? And what type of ProRes should I use. I've heard there's a couple

This topic was discussed in detail on DVinfo.net, just use the search option. Transcoding to ProRes from HDV only made sense with JVC GY-HD series of cameras, as FCP was breaking up the clips and neither Apple or JVC were willing to fix that problem. FCP6 and 7 support native edit of HDV, so you should do so. You import the footage via Firewire through L&C window. You set your timeline to HDV and you RENDER EVERYTHING in ProRes. Transcoding to ProRes will not increase the quality, contrary every time you transcode you lose quality- period.
To back up my statement I am using article written by Steve Mullen http://broadcastengineering.com/hdtv/long-gop-editing-0709/index.html
So to recap it: capture HDV, edit native, Render ProRes, The least space on HDD and the best quality.

Best quality? Wouldn't that be editing native and then rendering Uncompressed 10-bit or Animation Codec? More HD space for sure, but I only need the renders long enough to run the sequences through Compressor.

no it would not. there are pages and hundreds of posts on this subject matter on DVinfo.

So just clarrifying...It's everything set to HDV in the Audio/Video Settings Window, then in the User Preferences window under the Render Control tab I change it to ProRess 422?
