HDV Clip Limit??

I started working on my first project shot with my Canon xh-a1 in vegas and have hit a problem.

It seems that after importing about 70 m2t clips into my project, vegas gives up and crashes. I started this with 7.0e. I did some reading and saw E had some issues, so I un-installed and reverted to 7.0d and still having the same problems.

I also read that this was a well known bug in 6.0 - so I removed my old version of 6.0 as well. Still having the issues.

Has anyone else ran into this?

I'm running on a C2D E4300 with 2GB of ram - surely this is enough? If i have less clips than the threshold (around 70) everything works fine.

Thanks for any help!

I would reinstall all the Vegas..but before you reinstall..make sure all the remnants of you previous installation is gone. There maybe a conflict with 6.0 and 7.0 installation. You might try to install in smaller batches and make sure to install your clips in another hard drive vs the system drive.

Are you storing the clips on separate drive from the Vegas appplication? If not install another internal or purchase 7500rpm external. In the interim try increasing the size of your paging file.

Windows swaps large files in and out of memory and uses your hard drive and a paging file for that function.

Lastly, m2t files are a bear for any computer even a C2D processor. You are very well advised to convert these clips to a Cineform intermediates (now NEO) or use DV Film's Raylight.

The optimum config is to have your Vegas program on your system drive (C), your clips on another and render to a third. Really optimum for the second and third would be a RAID config. But you should do well just separating the clips from the program and us an intermediate codec. If you have the clips on a second drive turn file indexing off for that drive. This may slow searching for clips but releases the computer from loading and maintaing the clip index into memory .

Hope this helps.

I have XP on one partition, programs (Vegas) on second partition.

I have a project drive that stores all the m2t clips as well as the project file.

I'll try removing everything (both versions) again and see if anything is left around.

I've tried reducing my page file, increasing, limiting RAM preview size - nothing seems to work.

I've actually nailed it down to around 85 files that really causes the problem. Vegas alerts that I'm low on memory (even though it's using 450MB of the 2 Gigs) and page file sits around 1.8GB and I allow 4GB to page file.

I tried running registry mechanic to clean stuff up.. still same problem. I'm wondering if I'm going to have to end up wiping the system and doing a clean install of everything.

Have you guys had projects with 85+ clips in your project media folder? I don't even get them to the timeline before the error hits.

I had this problem, didn't find a solution. I was already sold on cineform for workflow reasons, so it just cemented my decision. Sorry I can't offer more help, but yes I had the exact same problem.

Yeah - after converting all the m2t files to cineform intermediates they all load into the project with no problem. Odd limitation, but since I was planing on cineform anyway I guess it doesn't matter. Just a pain having to load up only 50 or so at a time to convert.

Presumably you know this, but NEO HDV lets you capture direct to Cineform... which is the route I took.

Is everyone suffering this Vegas HDV limitation, or is it just a few of us?

Are you capturing in Vegas or HDV Split?

I'd love to take the NEO route, but budget is restricting me at the moment.

For now my process is capture in vegas through the included HDV capture utility - bring in 50 m2t at a time - batch export to cineform - clear out project media - reimport cinform avis... and now I guess, start editing... which brings me to this thread: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=101414

Definitely more tedious that NEO, but no extra costs at the moment.

You'd think there was a script to utilize Vegas and somehow automate the process i've described.

not sure what HDV split is, but I am capturing each clip seperately.
