HDV 24p rendering problem

Hi all,

I just began editing (or attempting to edit) my first HDV work (having done all DV before). I shot with a Canon HV20 (limited budget) in its 24p mode. I captured everything using the Easy Setup in FCP for 24p without a problem. I just sat down to begin moving things onto the timeline, when I realized that every clip I put in the timeline needs to be rendered. I checked the settings, still 24p Easy Setup, tried to find an answer in the manual, and am now at a loss. Could it be that the Canon's 24p "mode" is not real 24p? In which case, do I really have to render everything while I edit? Has anyone encountered this problem before? Any suggestions? I'm working on a 60 minute documentary and would like to save myself the hassle if I can....

Thanks!

I believe it's 24p with a pulldown in a 29.97 clip, so you have to process the footage after capture to remove the extra frames.

Hmmm, is there any way to render everything in the log bins before putting them into the timeline? Just let the computer sit for a day or so, rendering everything?

You can either send them into compressor and have it remove the pulldown, or just cut it into a standard HDV 29.97 project, in which case you won't have to render anything. If the documentary is going to film at some point then I'd definitely process it and remove the pulldown, and encode it in an easier format to deal with like DVCPRO HD or PRO RES. If it's just going to TV or DVD, you can leave it as HDV 29.97. It will still have that film look.
