HDV 1080i format works with Vegas ?

Hi trypto, I ve read a hell of a lot of reviews with our friend google. If i wanted to take opinions from there i would have. Im asking here because i can get feedback from people who are using it for what i want to "VIDEO EDITING WITH VEGAS". I cant get those bench marks outside of here. So what is your suggestion, with your personal experience/ r&d ? Id like to hear that.

Yes Smithy,
Thats as usual. Because i never connect 3d workstations etc to the net. In fact i dont even install antivirus on them. Only a few appliactions which are intended for media work. Norton slows the system down a lot by monitoring and scanning each and every internal process. So NO av solution. No Internet. Etc. Please tell me,, you really feel the dual core 3.4 which came out before the Core 2 duo 2.4 is a better option ???

I would compare the L2 figure on both processors...the bigger number is better. I thought earlier you were comparing both the same type of processor vs the ones you have listed earlier. Also you would also need to make sure your MB and Ram is compatible. Then you must also factor in heat generation...too hot of a processor is not great. After figuring on those factors and any problems that has been generated by existing users...it is pretty obvious which one to get. Not all processors are the same. I would look in to gamer forums because they are the cutting edge of what to get and not to get. IE www.extremeoverclocking.com.

Huh,,,LOL. Noone wants to say which one is better ? LOL. What processor is your machine using please ? Lets see if the rephrase works !

How does one check wether the MB and ram are compatible ?

Go to the website of your MB manufacturer and see which processor and RAM it supports. Every type of processor is different and needs a MB specific to it.

I personally use an AMD Athlon64 X2 4400+ Dual Core processor, with the Asus A8N-SLi Premium MB, and 2 GB DDR2 PC3200 RAM.

David > Only if a Ram and Proc are compatible with the board will they work right ? Or is it possible that they can work and still be incompatible ? Im an events guy. Me researching into MB hardware etc is going to be too tough for me to understand. Thats why im paying an outlet whos assembling this. He knows if its compatible or not. But if like i said they can work and still be incompatible then im in trouble.

OK Good because my tech guy here suggested an asus motherboard. I assume they are good quality. And im primarily trying to decide only between the core 2 duo 2.4 ghz and the dual core (Pentium D) 3.4. Even if theres something more powerful i cant go higher as this is not my main stream work. I only do editing as a supplementary work/ my own requirements for the live events i do. So time consumed is a little bit tolerable etc. I found that there is only a 10-20 % difference between the Dual Core 3.4ghz and the Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz. But the pricing of the core 2 is double. So its not like im paying for double the performance. I dont think the 10% difference would hit me badly. If someone can tell me if the difference between these two processors can really be large then i might consider going for the Core 2 Duo. Any suggestions ?

Hi Trypto, I took a look at your link. Quite revealing. But i would appreciate if you can gveme some personal feedback. Thanks.

Hi David,

I got my system. 3.4 Ghz Dual Core, Original Intel 945GNTL Board with built in 5.1 sound, 2 x 1 gb 667 mhz ram, 2 mb L2 cache x 2, nvidia 6300gs 256mb + 256 shared, 3 x 250gb HDDs @ 7200rpm sata 2, Dual Monitors. Would this system suffice to handle a video stream of about 1 hrs in .m2t format ? My final video (to be rendered) would be about 45 mins in total run length.

You're probably in a better position to judge than I am -- I don't really use HDV, so give it a whirl and see what you think.

The length of the video doesn't matter until you render. For editing, it can be ten seconds or ten hours; it should be handled all the same.

I thought the length of the video we load has to reside in the memory or something akin to enable the software to read any portion clicked on. This means bigger file, bigger memory footprint in the timeline. Am i wrong ?

Hmm, i guess ill do that. Meanwhile i wanted a fallback plan. Say if im unable to import the M2Ts or that they are too heavy on my system. Im planning to recapture from the same camera in normal DV format. I believe the Z1 has that ability to downconvert. Ive heard even the downconverted footage has much better color and clarity than normal dv since it was shot on HDV. Then i can always work in DV since it have no better option. What do you think ?

I would try converting to Cineform before I downconverted to DV from the camera.

Or, consider using Raylight.

Cant affor to go for raylight for now David. Remember as i said i cant invest in that much extras and plugins since we arent makin a pie out of this work. Only doing our own jobs. In fact my scenario is like tryng to build my own TV just to watch the daily news flash. But since it was serious hobby for long with the 3ds max background etc ive leapt into this. So can you tell me the non-extra expenses route please ? Can converting to cineform be chosed form the capture dialogue itself ?
